Unclaimed WWII Military Decorations at the KY Treasury By Lorran Ferguson Frankfort, KY - In honor of Memorial Day and the upcoming 75th Anniversary of The World War II D-Day Landing at Normandy, Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball is working to return WWII military decorations held as Unclaimed Property at the Kentucky State Treasury. Through a social media campaign partnering with the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Kentucky Department of Military Affairs, Treasurer Ball is working to spread the word about these military decorations in hopes of reaching the owner of the items. "As the granddaughter of a WWII veteran, I know the importance of these decorations to veterans and their families," Treasurer Ball said. "As then-Supreme Allied Commander Dwight Eisenhower said, these men brought about 'the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.'" The campaign is focused specifically on one set of decorations. These items were left in a safety deposit box at South Central Bank in Bowling Green, Kentucky before they were transferred to the Kentucky State Treasury. The names on the account are Jeremy and Karla Segur of Smiths Grove, Kentucky. These decorations indicate that the service member they were awarded to served in the U.S. Army in World War II, was stationed in the U.S. for part of the war, participated in four of the 19 European campaigns, and remained in Europe during the post-war occupation. The decorations include an Army Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European - African - Middle Eastern Campaign Medal (with four bronze campaign stars), World War II Victory Medal, and World War II Occupation Service Medal. "I invite the public to join our efforts by spreading the word and sharing our posts on social media," Treasurer Ball said. "Every bit of support we get puts us closer to returning these precious items to the service member or the service member's family." The owners of these decorations can call the Kentucky State Treasury at 502-564-4722 or email unclaimed.property@ky.gov to begin the process of claiming the items. Treasurer Allison Ball has returned a record amount of unclaimed property since taking office at over $77.5 Million returned.
