Carol Perkins: Go Eme Go

Previous Column: Sticky Mess

By Carol Perkins

I watched the game as if I knew the rules.

I applauded when the fans behind me clapped their hands. As I studied the field and watched the plays, I saw a pattern much like basketball. Throw the ball, which was a hard rubber ball, to the teammate holding a stick with a minnow-type net on the end, and the teammate tossed the ball to another teammate whose goal was to sling it as hard as possible into the net (goal). This goal was like soccer with a "goalie" trying to keep it from reaching the net.

This sport was foreign to me, but I soon realized that when one team was ahead by ten points, the clock ran down to zero. Lacrosse is my granddaughter Eme's sport, and we went to Austin to see her play two games. I may now be an expert.

As I watched her play, I thought about when she was little and how we cheered when she ran up and down the soccer field, her blond ponytail swaying.

First 2023 Saturday Session at Genealogy & History Research Ctr

By Mike Watson

Most early settlers in the Adair County area came into the region one of two ways--Through the Cumberland Gap, then north west into south central Kentucky, or down the Ohio River to Limestone, now Maysville, or to the Falls of the Ohio, now Louisville, then overland into the interior.

Following animal trails--primarily buffalo and elk--early settlers walked or rode horseback as they came to the settlement areas. Only later did wheeled vehicles traverse the tracks into the areas of growing population.

Learn more about migration into Kentucky and Adair County at our next Saturday Session, from NoonCT to 2pmCT on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the Adair Genealogy & History Research Center.

Poem being researched to help Marsha sleep

Marsha's husband, John Hunter Walker, woke her at three on a recent Frankfort, KY morning puzzling over this poem remembered from his youth in Columbia. His Dad Pete was friends with JM Shelly, a well known writer of poems. It is hoped someone has a copy (or a corrected version) of the one below:
By John M Shelly

The seats are hard in our court yard
because they're made of metal

But this is where they sit and spit
And this is where they whittle
