Coleman, KY State Police pay tribute to fallen officers

By Sgt. Billy Gregory

Frankfort, KY - Today, Kentucky State Police (KSP), along with Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman and Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Mary Noble, held the annual memorial ceremony honoring 37 fallen troopers, officers and highway patrolmen who have died in the line of duty since the agency's inception. This ceremony has previously been held in May during National Police Week, but was rescheduled to ensure family members of the fallen officers could safely gather together.

"These fallen officers served well and protected honorably. Our commonwealth is indebted to the work they did to make this a better Kentucky," said Lt. Gov. Coleman. "When tragedy touches our law enforcement family, we all grieve and are continuing to grieve with the families of these 37 heroes we are paying tribute to today. I am honored to be here to remember these Kentuckians not for the way they died, but for the way they lived."

KSP Commissioner Phillip Burnett, Jr. told family members of the fallen officers that the sacrifices their loved ones made will never be forgotten.

"These heroes will live on in the hearts and minds of every trooper who follows in their footsteps," said Commissioner Burnett. "It is instilled in each cadet as they enter these grounds the importance of remembering those who paved the path for them. Before they graduate, they know the names and the stories of each of the thirty-seven units we honor today."

Letter: 18 Wheelers Coming Through Town

Joe Hare writes:
Has anyone else wondered why so many semi's come through town instead of using the bypass? Well here could be part of the answer. If you are westbound on the Cumberland Parkway and take the 49 Exit, the directions you see send you into town and around the Square. But if you are eastbound and get off at the same exit you are directed to go to the bypass and go around town.

If this was corrected I would think it would help the amount of truck traffic through town, making things a little safer and less congested for us all. Thanks to Cindi Alexander of Lake Cumberland CDL School for noticing and calling my attention to it. - JH

Click for more letters - Traffic through downtown Columbia has been under discussion since the March, 2021 damage was done to the side of the historic Adair County Courthouse.

Continued communications like Joe's, with challenges and suggestions that come straight from truck owners experiencing results of our signage, will help Columbia get it right. The City has made a call to the State Highway Department requesting bypass truck route signs for all but those delivering to downtown. - LW
