Epicurean Kentuckian: Cookbook brought memories of its publisher

2014-09-17 - Photo by Linda Waggener.
The cookbook in the photo was rescued and shared by Ada Burton who thought it belonged in the hands of family. Its publisher was Marcia McKinley Burton Cook who worked tirelessly to organize her Waggener family members to bring them together each year at a Christmas in July celebration. Sadly, Marcia was lost to the family in an auto accident in 2003. Ada asked that the cookbook be saved and delivered to Marcia's mom, Fay Waggener McKinley, who was librarian while Ada was at Shepherd Elementary School. Thanks, Ada, for reminding us of our daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandmother, niece, aunt, cousin, teacher, Marcia Ann. - Linda

Tips on Christ in a Manger - by other names

Jon Halsey writes:
Try looking for "Night Blooming Cereus". The botanical name is: "Epiphyllum oxypetalum" I know some people refer to this as "Christ in the Manger" while others call it "Dutchman's Pipe". Another possibility and in the same family is Hylocereus undatus. This variety is sometimes referred to as "Jesus in the Cradle". Both are beautiful plants and I can see how they could share the common name the reader is looking for. - Jon Halsey

A long ago neighbor remembers Ed Edmonds (1919-2014)

Ed was one of twelve kids, and his sweet Mom, Nettie, always had room for one more kid - grand-kid, neighbor kid, any kid - on her lap and in her heart. She was the nearest thing to a real "Gra'ma" I ever had. - NEIGHBOR
About: Edwin Edmonds, 94, Russell Co., KY (1919-2014)

From a boyhood neighbor

Ed Edmonds and his first wife and their boys, along with his brother Morris and their Mom and Dad, lived a little farther out Bottom Road than did my family. Ed's father, Mr. Ben Edmonds, had been one of my father's schoolteachers in the early 1920s when both families lived near the Russell-Pulaski line before removing to near Russell Springs in the early 1930s and becoming neighbors.

FM2 farmers take in Russell County High Tunnel Field Day

High tunnels are popping up everywhere
Click on headline for story with photo(s)

By Barbara Armitage

So what do farmer's do for fun? The farmer's from the Farmer's Market on the Square like to spend time at events like the High Tunnel Field Day at the Adams Farm in Russell Springs, KY, learning more about how they can extend their growing seasons in order to bring customers fresh fruits and vegetables longer.

It's true that there's not much in this world more fun than picking tomatoes on a hot summer day but sometimes we do take a day away from the farm.

High tunnels are popping up everywhere thanks mostly to the EQUIP High Tunnel Initiative through the NRCS office. Crops grown in ground in these tunnels, like these strawberries and raspberries, are protected from the elements and are typically ready for market weeks before and after crops grown conventionally.

Results of high tunnel production can be seen at the Farmer's Market on the Square Saturdays, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY 8am-1pmCT and Tuesdays 4:30pm-7:30pmCT.

Writer, re Payroll Tax: Income taxes are sticky, live forever

Personal commentary
Writer says payroll tax of 1% means 2.45% decline of income for community

Mohammad Pourheydarian writes:
Using Paul Patton's multiplier of 2.45 for Kentucky and ignoring the balance budget multiplier a 1% income tax increase means 2.45% decline of income for the community. Income tax is sticky upward, once it is established you can not get rid of it. Instead a tax increase establishing a higher educational expectation goes a long way in improving the living standard. Simply speaking people are much more efficient in using their hard earned money than government. In today's competitive environment it is too risky to increase taxes and push away prospective businesses. - Mohammad Pourheydarian
