LWC Wrestling - Kohl Dodd takes 1st place - Newberry Open

NEWBERRY, NC - (3 Feb 2018) – The Lindsey Wilson wrestling program competed at the Newberry Open Saturday where Kohl Dodd took first place at 184 pounds and Brett Bradford finished in second at 165 pounds after pinning his first three opponents. On the day five Blue Raiders placed in the top five of their respective weight classes.

Dodd took down his first opponent Troy Vick-Timmons of Coastal Wrestling Club (VA) by way of a pin in 1:04. Dodd then defeated Dylan Eaton of Newberry (N.C.) on a 20-8 major decision. In the semifinals, Dodd wrestled a Mid-South Conference opponent Chris Williams (No. 13 at 184) of Southeastern (FL) where he advanced due to a medical forfeit. In the championship match Dodd competed Steven Decius of Limestone where he pulled out a 12-11 decision to claim first place at 184 pounds.

Bradford first defeated an unattached wrestler in Maliik Marcin in 1:23 and then took down Joshua Walker of NCAA Division I institution Gardner-Webb (N.C.) in 3:34. In a semifinal matchup with Stephon Halliburton of Queens (N.C.) Bradford added another pin to his resume, this time in 4:58 to advance to the championship match. Bradford fell to Trace Thorne of NCAA Division I institution Florida on a 6-4 decision to end his tournament with a second place finish.

Logan Hatfield wrestled at the 141-pound weight class and received a bye during the first round. He got his day started on the mat when he defeated Jacob Romano of Limestone (SC) by a 7-5 decision. Hatfield fell into the third place match when he lost on a 9-2 decision to Parker Walton of NCAA Division I institution Duke (NC). Hatfield finished in fourth place after he lost on a 4-3 decision to Walton.

Lucas Miozza, at 184 pounds, fell into the consolation bracket after losing his first match of the day on an 11-4 decision to Limestone’s Decius. After a bye and an 18-1 technical fall over Jacob Balmas of Queens, Miozza found himself in the consolation championship match. Miozza defeated Argie Burnette of St. Andrews (NC) with a 12-0 major decision.

At heavyweight, Raynel Brown downed his first opponent Copeland Barbee of Queens with a 21-5 technical fall. In a semifinal matchup with Jackson Price of Gardner-Webb (NC), Brown lost on a 4-2 decision, sending him to the consolation side of the bracket where he was set to face Lindsey Wilson teammate Luke Shaffer for a shot in the third place match.

Brown won his final match of the day on an 8-4 decision against unattached Dominic Davis to claim fifth place at heavyweight.
