Roger D Smith DMC - Tax: Deed was going to be done no matter

By Roger D Smith DMD
Personal Commentary

I agree with Dr. Arnold that true openness on the occupational tax would have been to announce the Council's intention prior to the filing date for candidates. I believe more people would have filed. In acting as it did, I believe that the public responses were mute and the deed was going to be done no matter what was said.

I don't think Dr. Arnold will be upset in my describing us as "Country Boys" and understands what a few dollars can mean to what a family can and cannot do. I know when I was growing up what it meant to us.

I do think I know him well enough to say that he shares my desire for better opportunities in our community, and I also think that many dollars have been spent without a plan of action and it shows in that we have little to show for those dollars.

I learned years ago that if you have a poor employee, paying them a higher salary won't make them a better employee. I kind of see the same effect in this tax.

I admire Mr. Dykes for saying that we don't have an industrial site but rather a farm and I further admire Ms. Waggener for her vote against the tax.

I think we can do better and for the young people in this community, and I think we owe it to them to make it happen. - Roger D Smith DMD
