We are incredibly blessed here in Adair County to be situated right in the middle of Green River Lake, Lake Cumberland, and Dale Hollow Lake. Lakes draw tourists and tourists inevitably have money to spend here in our local economy.
So geography presents us with opportunities. Unfortunately, having a steady stream of tourists in and out of our community doesn't guarantee a profit boost for your business. There are three things you should do to prepare to make sure you're ready for the summer months.

- Plan. Make sure you're ready to take advantage of the season if and when you get that influx of tourists. Do you have inventory on hand to meet the demands of lake-goers? Do your employees know what to do? Are they knowledgeable about your products/services? Prepare for the best and worst case scenarios no matter what happens you and your staff are ready to offer professional customer service.
- Promote. Some of the region's tourists may not be familiar with the area. This may be their first summer here in south central Kentucky. If so, they may not know that your business even exists or what you do. The only way they will find you is if you're actively working to target them. Get your name out there by advertising using print, radio, television, billboards, internet, social media and any other methods you can think of to make sure tourists are aware of who you are and what you do. Sure it takes money to advertise, but the return on investment is worth it.
- Prove. After you've promoted yourself through advertising, make sure you are able to effectively do everything you've said you can do in your marketing. There is nothing worse than over promising and under delivering. On the other hand, there is nothing better than over delivering and offering great products and services. When you do, those new clients/customers will not only come back, but they'll bring more with them.
It's that simple. Plan to succeed, promote yourself, and prove to your customers that you are as good as you say you are.
Don't be afraid to think outside the box. Offer new products or services. Have a huge weekend sale to drive traffic into your business. Network with other businesses through the Chamber of Commerce to maximize your exposure. When a guest is looking for something you don't have, send them to another local business that does. When you do, they'll reciprocate.
Also, make sure we have information about your business at the Chamber office. It makes it easier for us to promote you to visitors when we have information handy to share.
