Birds of Kentucky: Golden-crowned Kinglet

I heard a few of these tiny birds in a backyard tree long before I saw them. All About Birds describes Golden-crowned Kinglets as "frenetically active," and barely larger than a hummingbird. They don't disturb leaves or branches as they move through a tree, so motion and sound are the best way to spot them. Comments | Permalink

Dalias and Cosmos return for an encore

Donna writes, "That rain we got last week really perked up the flowers in front of my goat barn! These Dalias and Cosmos are special to me because they're descendants of the seeds I collected from my daddy's garden after he died, over 24 years ago. Every fall, I collect the seeds for the next Springs' garden, since they're not perennials." Comments | Permalink

While hiking around in the woods this weekend, I was reminded of the habit of some common Kentucky trees to just drop their leaves all at once, without much change in color. Hoping we get to see some deep reds and oranges in coming weeks from the trees that take the time to put on a bit of a fall show. Comments | Permalink
