LWC Football defeats Cincinnati Christian 73-0 on Homecoming

By Christopher Coombs

The No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team defeated Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) on Homecoming during their 2018 Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division home opener. The Blue Raider defense produced the program's second ever shutout during the game, the first coming against Cincinnati Christian during the 2016 campaign.

The Blue Raider offense was firing on all cylinders as they produced 538-yards of total offense with 221-yards coming on the ground and 317 coming via the air. The Lindsey Wilson defense held the Eagles to just 165 yards, limiting CCU to just 35 rushing yards and 130 yards through the air. The defense combined for two interceptions, one fumble recovery as well as one blocked punt and one blocked field goal.

Jaylen Boyd scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns as he added his first ever 100-yard game after rushing for exactly 100-yards. Cameron Dukes completed 13-of-22 passes for 238-yards and one touchdown as Tre Dickerson had three receptions for 65-yards.

The opening drive for both teams resulted in a three-and-out but on the next Blue Raider possession LWC's offense would put the game's first points on the board. Boyd broke through a huge hole blown open by the offensive line from nine-yards out for the score. The drive lasted nine plays as the Blue Raiders traveled 66-yards.

Lindsey Wilson's defense again forced a three-and-out on the next Eagle possession but Cincinnati Christians defense responded, forcing LWC into a 4th-and-24 from their own 27-yard line forcing a Blue Raider punt.

On the ensuing Eagle possession, Cincinnati Christian was finally able to move the ball against the stout Blue Raider defense driving all the way to the Lindsey Wilson 2-yard line for a first-and-goal. The LWC defense would keep the Eagles out of the end zone, forcing a field goal attempt. A bad snap caused the special teams unit to attempt a pass to the end zone, but Trent Mueller laid a hit that jarred the ball loose, preventing the score.

The second quarter started with both offenses failing to pick up a first down on their opening possessions as the Blue Raiders were able to set their offense in motion on their next possession.

After staring on their own 20-yard line, Boyd burst through the line on a second and one for 27-yards and into Cincinnati Christian territory at the 44-yard line. On the next play, Cameron Dukes scrambled out of the pocket to find an open Jordan Lasley for 14-yards. Boyd would add runs of 11 and five yards before capping off the drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown, his second score of the day.

The Blue Raider defense would force their first turnover of the game on the next Eagle possession when Holt Keeling picked off Alex Duran, giving the Blue Raiders possession at their own 35-yardline. Two plays later, Lasley took a reverse down the left sideline for 39-yards and a score, increasing the LWC lead to 21-0 with 8:37 left in the half.

Another interception by Lindsey Wilson, this time by Airius Phillips on the next Eagle possession set up the Blue Raiders deep in Cincinnati Christian territory at the 32-yard line. On third down, Dukes fired a strike over the middle of the field finding and open Cam Wyche in the back of the end zone.

Cincinnati Christian, starting from their own 35 yard line would drive all the way to the Lindsey Wilson 18-yard line before attempting their second field goal of the day. Mark Pruitt blocked the attempt as the ball was recovered by Mueller and returned two yards to the LWC 14 with 1:53 left in the half.

Dukes would lead the LWC offense to their final score of the half increasing the Blue Raider lead to 35-0 with 24.3 seconds left. Dukes completed passes of 8, 29 and 21 yards as Delvin Dunn added rushes of eight, eight, and five yards before breaking the goal line on a nine-yard run for the score.

The Lindsey Wilson offense produced 19 first downs in the half as Dukes passed for 165-yards and one touchdown as Boyd led the ground attack racing for 81 yards and two scores. The Blue Raider defense forced four three-and-outs, two interceptions and one blocked field goal in the half while holding the Eagles to just 129 total yards.

The Lindsey Wilson defense forced another three-and-out to open the second half. On the ensuing LWC possession the Blue Raiders were able to score in just three plays from their own 43-yard line. Dukes found an open Jay Gaudlock over the middle of the field for 38-yards. Two plays later Boyd received a pitch and was able to take it 19-yards for his third touchdown of the day.

Another three-and-out by the Eagle offense gave the Blue Raiders great field possession after Pruitt returned the punt 20-yards to the CCU 40-yard line. A defensive holding Cincinnati Christian moved the Blue Raiders to the CCU 30-yard line. Dukes completed passes of 15 and 14 yards before Darius Clark scored from one-yard out, increasing the LWC lead to 49-0 with 10:35 remaining in the half.

After another Cincinnati Christian three-and-out allowed the LWC special teams unit to create havoc on the ensuing punt. Antoine Jefferson blocked the punt that was recovered by Cam Wyche at the CCU 24-yard line. It took the Blue Raider offense, now led by quarterback Peyton Veraldi, three plays to score. Delvon Dunn scored from five yards out giving LWC a 56-0 advantage.

Cincinnati Christian would travel all the way to the Lindsey Wilson 12-yard line before Cameron Thurman forced Malik Perez to fumble. The ball was recovered by Clay Chasteen at the LWC 10-yard line.

On first down, Veraldi found Milton Whelchel for 40-yards and later found Jay Gaudlock for 13-yards to move the ball into Eagle territory at the 37-yard line. The Blue Raiders would reach the CCU 20-yard line before Jared Dougherty connected on a 38-yard field goal attempt, increasing the LWC lead to 59-0 with less than two minutes left in the quarter.

The Blue Raiders scored their ninth touchdown of the day on a Verladi pass to Clark to start the fourth quarter. The drive lasted six plays, totaling 40-yards and increased the LWC lead to 66-0.

Antoine Jefferson increased the LWC lead to 73-0 when he returned a CCU punt 55-yards for a score marking just the seventh time a Blue Raider has returned a punt for a touchdown in program history.

Lindsey Wilson's defensive effort was led by Luke Bowman who recorded seven tackles as David Nobles and James Sharp both added six. Nobles recorded two tackles for a loss.

The Blue Raiders are back in action when they travel to Georgetown (Ky.) to take on the No. 15 Tigers at 12:30pmCT from Toyota Stadium, Crawford Dr, Georgetown, KY.
