Remembering Ed Waggener: Thank you for all your gifts

By Ben Arnold

Thank you Ed for so many things and all your gifts to so many. Our community has a hole, a hole that no one will be able to fill. A heavy sadness hangs everywhere I go, the community trying to digest this great disappointment.

One of the things I have noticed is how each person seems to have unique and individual memories. Ed approached all of us from where we were, not where he was. I suspect each of us though we had a special connection with Ed.

I so frequently dropped in at Ed and Linda's house, even though I don't like drop-ins myself. We would laugh about it and then always, always have a most interesting conversation. I would often say, "I came for some inspiration or to learn a new thought". I always left with something of value; motivation for another drop-in.

Ed was smart, insightful, positive, caring, knowledgeable and always looking to learn more. He was built to be a newsman and he did it so very well. His love of nature and frequent drives around the county are memorialized in his and Linda's photos (many of which I have clipped into a file). I would often tease him that I knew Linda's photos because they were so much better and he would just smile and agree. The next to last time I saw him, I commented that maybe his photos were getting about as good as Linda's, and he said, "no, she is still better." I hope and believe that Columbia Magazine is archiving all their beautiful images of Adair County.

As we all mourn with Linda, Tom and Pen, let's remember his great gifts. He lived life well and left the world much better than he found it. His footprints will linger for many years. Thank you Ed, rest in peace. --Ben
