Ellen Shirley Houk, 89, Green County, KY (1929-2018)

August 22, 1929 - September 12, 2018 (Age 89)
She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the South Greensburg Baptist Church. She owned the former Central Kentucky Monument Company for 21 years from 1964 until 1985. She was a native of Greensburg, KY, and a resident of the city at the time of her death. She was the matriarch of a large, highly regarded family. She was the the daughter of the late Robert E. Matney & Zada Young Matney, and the widow of Rual Edward Houk, her husband of over 53 years. She leaves 22 direct and two step- living descendants. Her final resting place will be in Little Barren Cemetery in Green County, KY.

Mrs. Ellen Shirley Matney Houk, 89, of Greensburg, KY, departed this life on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at her home.

The funeral services for Mrs. Ellen Shirley Matney Houk will be conducted at 2pmCT, Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S Main Street, Greensburg, KY, with burial to follow in the Little Barren Cemetery, Little Barren Church Road, Greensburg, KY. Bro. Meryl Young and Bro. Joseph Wilcoxson will officiate. Visitation is requested 4pm-8pmCT, Saturday, September 15, 2018, at the Cowherd and Parrott Funeral Home and after 7amCT, Sunday until time of the funeral service.



Pallbearers: Eddie Walker, Doug Neagle, Charlie Houk, Zeth Houk, Nate Houk, and Taylor Bishop.

Ellen Shirley Houk, 89, Green County, KY (1929-2018

Mrs. Ellen Shirley Matney Houk of Greensburg, KY, daughter of the late Robert E. Matney & Zada Young Matney, was born on Thursday, August 22, 1929 in Green County, KY, and departed this life on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at her home. She was 89 years and 21 days of age.

She had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the South Greensburg Baptist Church. She owned the former Central Kentucky Monument Company for 21 years from 1964 until 1985.

Mrs. Houk was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Rual Edward Houk on November 23, 1997 having united in marriage on August 29, 1944.

Survivors include:
  • A daughter - Shirley Neagle of Campbellsville, KY

  • A son and daughter-in-law - Maxie & Martha Houk of Greensburg, KY

  • Five grandchildren - Jeff and Julie Walker of Greensburg, KY; Eddie Walker of St. Louis, MO; Amy & Todd England, and Charlie & Regina Houk all of Greensburg, KY; and Doug and Mary Joe Neagle of Campbellsville, KY

  • Two step-grandchildren - Jeffrey Neagle & Jennifer and Dale Boils of Campbellsville, KY

  • Thirteen great-grandchildren - Jake Walker, Raylen Walker, Ashton Bishop, Taylor Bishop, Ella Cate Bishop, Zeth Houk, Nate Houk, Vallie Houk, Brittany England, Kendra, Zack, Nick, and Jacob

  • Two great-great-grandchildren - Reed Jacob Scott and Liam Mays

  • Two sisters-in-law - Linda Houk of Greensburg, KY; and Peggy Houk of Campbellsville, KY

  • And a host of other relatives and friends.
Mrs. Houk was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law: J.L. Walker and Reed Neagle; brothers and sisters: Lloyd Matney, Evelyn Edwards, Sonnie Matney, Dellie Curry, Myrtie Matney, Woodrow Matney, Cecil Matney, Johnnie Matney, and Lois Houk; and nine half brothers and sisters.

The family has asked that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Kentucky Organ Donors Association, which can be made at the funeral home.

The Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home, 206 S Main Street, Greensburg, KY, is in charge of arrangements.
