Day Trip: visits to Metcalfe, Barren, Hart & Green Counties, KY

Things had really changed in the few days, to months since we had seen all the area, most for the better, some greatly changed and neither an improvement nor a set back, some dramatically better as in Edmonton, and, along the way, a couple of old scenes were changed forever.
Photos and additional updates are being added throughout he day. Click on headline for latest updates.

Starting after the Farmers Market closed in Columbia, we headed west for a half-day exploration, or you can give this route a whole day and do even more touring than we did - maybe even make it to Mammoth Cave. It's a bonus if this tour is taken on a cloudy afternoon as it was, Saturday, August 18, 2018, so you don't have to battle sun grins on the western route.

We wanted to check Edmonton's progress for the city's 200th birthday celebration coming up on the Public Square September 7 and 8, 2018. There were flags decorating every window and flower pot. Somewhere back in time, somebody sure did a fine job of plotting the huge, green space for the courthouse yard and along the way others have done a fine job of keeping it beautiful and maintaining the historic courthouse so it stays in great shape.

Everything looked ready for the birthday so we headed out the Glasgow Road to check on Bowling Park, the duck families on the pond and Leftwich Hall where an event was in progress. We drove on toward the parkway to check out growth in that direction - no major changes in that direction.

After passing over the Cumberland Parkway, in a mile or so, Cave Ridge Road called to me so we turned right and headed north toward Knob Lick. Taking that slow road, allows for some stunning views of our level to rolling green farm country.

That road led us to the junction with Highway 70. The choices were to go right toward my birthplace, historic Sulphur Well, always a favorite, or continue west, turn left and go through Hiseville to Cave City, Horse Cave and Munfordville, which we did. The route home was east on Highway 88, then southeast on Highway 61 back to Columbia.

There was a swing through Cave City, a stop for dinner, then a trip north to Horse Cave where we made an interesting discovery - they've developed cell phone guided walking tours of their town which will definitely require a trip back when there's more time. We paused in front of The Bookstore and found it was closed for the day, but we learned from the sign in front of the store that read: "Horse Cave Stories Cellphone Walking Tour. The Bookstore, Stop #2. What makes this bookstore so unique is Tom Chaney, the owner. Call cell phone audio 270-854-3054 to learn about Horse Cave's resident storyteller." It also gave a QR code option to hear, in his voice, about his being a self-proclaimed historian and fabricator of tall tales. It advised that a QR Reader App may be required and gave the website horsecavestories.com.

Photos and more details will be added as time allows.

Wildflowers of KY: Pretty Paired Weeds - Golden Jewell & Iron

2018-08-19 - Metcalfe County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
A good downpour along the way only made these little blossoms shine more brightly on the roadside between Cave Ridge just outside Edmonton and the suburbs of Knob Lick on Highway 70. Yellow gold Jewellweed (we think) and deep purple Ironweed made for a pretty roadside bouquet. - LW

Corrections, clarifications, comments:
  1. Sharon Whitehurst - Yellow flower is Partridge Pea, not Jewelweed

Day Trip: Sadness at sight of fire victim - Hugh Squires store

2018-08-19 - KY 61, Green County, KY, just north of Adair County, KY line - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
We missed the story on this fire, which appears to have occurred rather recently, maybe concurrently with a fire at a residential building immediately south of this marking place so many have used for three quarters of a century. The Hugh Squires Store was a memorable building. Photo Saturday, August 18, 2018. We hope to add more details to this information as known - will appreciate comments and clarification. - EW

Day Trip - significant location in Cave City, KY

2018-08-26 - Hart County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The sign on top designates this building as the W.F. Toops & Co. 1911. In the 50s it was (or a building close by) which housed Midway Hardware, a wholesale distributor which sold to hardware and general stores in a wide area around Horse Cave. Midway distributed tobacco spears including those manufactured by E.P. Waggener & Sons, Columbia, KY. Ed remembered making deliveries there with his dad. - LW
