Business - commerce - economy, these are areas I've come to love, especially small business.

With jobs scarce in rural areas, many who wish to stay here have to turn their skills into a business of their own in order to make a living. Columbia is enjoying a surge of small business development. Young entrepreneurs would be helped if they could have support in the process of starting and running a business.

Based on life experience, I believe this is one of the most important areas of study a young person can experience. Yes, there must be reading/writing/arithmetic foundations, of course, but business should be a strong component, and it should have an emphasis on entrepreneurship by middle school. And I believe local successful business developers and local government must do all we can to support young business developers.

Why? Because young people need to know early in life that their ideas are worthy and business courses may help them know how to plan, start and run their ideas to earn income.

To help move these ideas forward, Ramsay will be sharing experience in the subject, specifically on three types of companies that support young business owners:

1) Coworking Spaces, shared facilities for business, a quick opportunity to those who want a low-cost place to try out business ownership.

2) Business Incubators where long-term office facilities are provided with a heavy emphasis on education, funding, and graduation of a small business into a larger separate location with, hopefully, jobs being created from the start up.

3) Accelerators, short-term programs designed to accelerate the growth of an existing company.

A discovery on LWC campus tour - Begley Chapel

2018-08-15 - 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, columbiamagazine.com & by George Kolbenschlag (at right).
"What's that building?" It's a question that comes up regularly during tours of the campus of Lindsey Wilson College and it was asked by business coach Lucas Ramsay, at left, on his recent tour of campus before he spoke at the August Columbia Adair County Chamber of Commerce meeting. He is pictured inside Begley Chapel, unique inside and out, which was celebrated at 20 years on the campus last fall. It is named for Dr. John B. Begley, the college's sixth president, who led Lindsey Wilson from 1977 to 1997. Click here to read about the Chapel at its 20-year celebration. - LW
