Election Nov. 2018 - Mayor Curtis Hardwick files for 5th term Filing sets up a re-run of Curtis Hardwick vs. Pam Hoots competition as City's Chief Executive. He's hoping this will be an election in which none of his other family members run against him. He's never lost a race for Mayor, but sometimes it's been close when his huge family had to choose between kinfolks. Click on headline for complete story with filing photo. By Ed Waggener Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick filed for re-election as Columbia Mayor, today, Monday, July 30, 2018, in the office of Adair County Clerk Lisa Greer. If he wins, it will be his 5th term as Mayor. He was first elected Mayor in 1994, in a three-way race with then incumbent Mayor Pam Hoots and and a former Mayor, Charles Marshall. In 1998, he won, defeating his cousin Hack Rowe, and Pam Hoots. In 2002, he defeated Eva Rigney, and a second candidate, Bill Hamilton. During that term, he was appointed to a high office in the administration of Gov. Ernie Fletcher, leaving the office to work in Frankfort. That term was fulfilled by Mayor Pat Bell, who was elected by the City Council serve out the term. In 2014, he ran against Councillor June Parson, and was also challenged by Dr. Ben Arnold, who tallied the second highest total in a write-in candidacy. Dr. Arnold has indicated on several occasions that he intends to run this year and would file before the August 9, 2018 deadline. In 2018, the race will be the third in which he and the other declared candidate, Pam Hoots, will be opponents. Mayor Hardwick's filing papers were signed by brother-in-law and sister-in-law Bob and Diane Benningfield. Mayor Hardwick quipped after the filing, that he hoped this would be one year in which a relative did not run against him. And the community wonders how well he would fare if none of his kinfolks had to chose between him and another family member. This story was posted on 2018-07-30 13:28:42
