Josh Patton to lead Lindsey Wilson Cycling program

SPEECHLESS: "Being hired as the head coach at a program I love is borderline speechless. The years I spent as a student-athlete at LWC are some of the most memorable years of my life. To come back to the program is an honor, not only to work with the cyclists, but to be back on campus and around so many things I love about LWC." - JOSH PATTON

COLUMBIA, KY - (Wed 25 Jul 2018) - Josh Patton has been named head coach of the Lindsey Wilson College cycling program, LWC athletics director Willis Pooler announced on Wednesday.

"I am pleased and fortunate to hire Josh to lead our cycling program," Pooler said. "He has a genuine passion for Lindsey Wilson College, our mission and our program. As a graduate and former student-athlete, he was highly successful in the classroom and won an individual national championship."

Patton returns to his alma mater to lead the program where he saw multiple successes as a student-athlete.

"Being hired as the head coach at a program I love is borderline speechless," Patton said. :The years I spent as a student-athlete at LWC are some of the most memorable years of my life. To come back to the program is an honor, not only to work with the cyclists, but to be back on campus and around so many things I love about LWC."

During his time as a student-athlete at Lindsey Wilson, Patton saw success both on the team and individual levels during his time riding for the Blue Raiders. Individually, he captured the 2013 Men's Division I Dual Slalom National Championship and was a part of the Blue Raiders' 2012 USA Cycling BMX National Championship Team. Patton reached the podium multiple times at USA Cycling National Championship events as both a team member and individual and helped LWC capture multiple Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships.

"It's exciting because in some ways I get to extend my time with the program and experience more of those moments we had when I was on the team, just through a different lens," Patton said.

Patton also has experience as a professional mountain bike racer for Airborne Bicycles. He rode courses throughout the United States and was the No. 1 ranked USA Dual Slalom Professional in 2013-14, collecting a third-place finish in the overall pro category at the Gravity East Downhill Series in 2014.

"I've been away from the program for a few years now but the daily routine for students hasn't changed much from when I was a student," Patton said. "I'll be able to relate really well and know what it takes to balance the academic/athletic life, giving them, especially the newer students, perspective into what worked for me and help them manage the change of lifestyle. I've been in their shoes and had very similar goals when I was competing."

He was also a Student Ambassador and Peer Mentor during his time as a student-athlete at LWC. Patton graduated from Lindsey Wilson in 2014 with a double major in business administration and media studies.

"I believe his love and enthusiasm for the college and the sport of cycling will allow him the opportunity to be an outstanding mentor and coach for our student-athletes," Pooler said.
