By George Kolbenschlag for Homeplace at Green River

Forty-five residents from at least six Kentucky counties attended a performance of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona at Homeplace on Green River's Shakespeare in the Barn.

The play was set in Texas and Mexico in the time of cowboys instead of Verona and Milan as it was in Shakespeare day. But the dialog was as The Bard of Avon wrote it.

Robert Brock, director of theater at Lindsey Wilson College brought the play to Homeplace as part of Homeplace's summer program in the restored barn at the farm.

Brock said setting the production in Texas and Mexico, "adds to the humor already in the script." This was the last of the Shakespeare in the Barn summer performances at the Homeplace, but there will be more shows in the barn this fall.

Forty-five residents from at least six Kentucky counties attended a performance of Shakespeare's The Two Gentlemen of Verona at Homeplace on Green River's Shakespeare in the Barn, Saturday, July 21, 2018. In the scene above, Valentine (Tyler Harding) on the left, confronts Thurio (Thomas Alvey) in competition for the attention of Sylvia (Gretchen Miles). A third suitor, Proteus (Jeremy Cloyd) also seeks Sylvia's favors in the play. Director Robert Brock says the struggle between Proteus and Valentine and the different cultures they must overcome makes this play the perfect catalyst for a western setting. - GEORGE KOLBENSCHLAG
