KSP Post 15 traffic safety check in Columbia leads to drug arrest

Columbia men arrested at Fairground Street traffic safety check location. Driver alleged to have failed sobriety test. Passenger arrested after Officer Johnny Dial and canine Gunner circled stopped vehicle, and Gunner alerted. Trooper Levi Scott, and Officer Johnny Dial search vehicle, leading to the arrest of a passenger on allegations of possession of meth, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia. Passenger also arrested. Both lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
Note -
A charge is merely an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a subsequent court of law.

Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY

ADAIR COUNTY, KY - (Thu 12 Jul 2018) - On July 11, 2018 at approximately 11pmCT Troopers from Post 15 were conducting a traffic safety check at an approved location on Fairground Street in Columbia, KY.

During the safety check Trooper Chase Willis made contact with a 2002 Buick Regal operated by Justin Carter, age 31, of Columbia.



Trooper Willis observed signs of impairment, performed Standardized field sobriety tests and arrested Mr. Carter for DUI.

While Tpr. Willis was performing sobriety tests, Columbia Police Department Officer Johnny Dial circled the vehicle with his canine Gunner, and informed Trooper Levi Scott that the canine had alerted narcotics in the vehicle.

Tpr. Scott and Officer Dial then searched the vehicle and located a glass jar containing marijuana, methamphetamine and small digital scales.

Trooper Scott then arrested the passenger, James Cary, age 29, of Columbia and charged him with
- Possession of a controlled substance 1st degree, 1st offense (methamphetamine,)
- Possession of marijuana
- and Possession of drug paraphernalia
Both subjects were lodged in the Adair County Regional Jail.
