LWC finishes 2nd in NAIA in Learfield Directors' Cup standings

Oklahoma City edges out LWC by slimmest of margins, 847.75 points vs 846 points for Lindsey Wilson College. Second year in a row Lindsey Wilson has runner up position.

COLUMBIA, KY (Thu 7 Jun 2018) - Lindsey Wilson athletics finished in second place in the 2017-18 NAIA Learfield Directors' Cup standings, National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) officials announced on Thursday.

The Blue Raiders were edged out by Oklahoma City (847.75 points) in the season-long competition by a slim margin of 1.75 points. Lindsey Wilson amassed 846 points as Wayland Baptist (Texas) finished in third place with 814 points.



It marks the second straight season the Blue Raiders have finished in second place behind the Stars. It is LWC's seventh-straight top-five finish and the school's sixth-consecutive top-three finish, with four second places and the lone win in school history during the 2015-16 season.

For the 2017-18 year, the Learfield Directors' Cup scoring was updated for the first time in recent history. The maximum amount of sports counted has increased by one and is now 13. Men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball and men's soccer are the four sports that must be counted for each institution. Additionally, up to nine other scores may be counted, regardless of gender, in the final score.

Lindsey Wilson scored in the maximum 13 sports allotted, having four scores omitted, including women's soccer, women's indoor track & field, women's golf and softball.

The Blue Raiders finished with 213 points in the fall, 356 in the winter and 277 in the spring.

Women's tennis led the spring scoring with 83 points after tying for third place. Men's outdoor track & field scored 73.5 points after finishing sixth, and the women's outdoor track & field team finished in 10th place to record 67.5 points. Men's tennis accounted for the final spring points with 53 after tying for ninth place.

The winter sports collected 356 total points as six teams scored in the competition led by women's swimming's 80 points after finishing fourth at the national championship. Wrestling added 75 points after a fifth-place finish, men's indoor track & field finished 11th to score 66 points while men's swimming scored 57 points for finishing 11th. Women's basketball tied for ninth to garner 53 points and men's basketball completed the winter scoring with 25 points after tying for 17th place.

Lindsey Wilson amassed 213 points during the fall season after scoring in volleyball, football and men's soccer. Volleyball collected the maximum 100 points after winning the program's first national title in December. Football finished tied for fifth to collect 70 points, while men's soccer secured 53 points for its tie for ninth place.

A total of 196 institutions scored during the academic year in the competition.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today.
