JIM: Pik Nik Palace, Famous Recipe predecessor, came in 1968 Jim revelation places old Famous Recipe building at 105 Hudson Street as few months shy of 50 years old. Famous Recipe occupied the building starting in 1972. Related: Changing Face of Hudson ST.: Five decade old change 1 Jun 2018 - BUSINESS NEWS Click on headline for story with photo & ad for Pik Nik Chicken at Pik Nik Palace By Jim "Coming Soon / Pik Nik Chicken" and "Coming Soon / Pik Nik Palace," These cryptically-worded ads were liberally sprinkled across several pages of every edition of the Adair County News from late September through part of November, 1968. (The November 27th, 1968, paper carried the accompanying notice. Scroll down.) The last mention of Pik Nik found in the News appeared almost exactly a year and half later (May 1970) in an ad announcing Coleman Lewis as the restaurant's new manager. Famous Recipe had arrived in town by mid-1971. Addendum: About the date Lee's opened: I found no mention in the News -- neither article or ad -- about the restaurant coming to town. However, the July 24 edition of the News carried a large ad for a bundle price when folks subscribed to the News (new or renewal) could get the Statesman at half price. This ad carried an image of a front page of each paper. The ones for News was from August 1971 (I found an image elsewhere of the actual paper for that one.) The one for the Statesman carried a cover date either of June or July --, ---- (date illegible; no year visible) and had a headline, "Famous Recipe Opens Here." This ad first appeared in the July 10 paper. I found no earlier mention, period, of the Lee's (either in Columbia or elsewhere), thus my note, "had arrived by" (that is, "no later than) declaration Lee's had arrived in town. - JIM This story was posted on 2018-06-03 15:51:54
