LWC T&F: 3 individuals and mens 4x100 qualify for finals

Lindsey Wilson's Hallmon, Bright, DeHaven-Boyd and Men's 4x100 relay qualify for Saturday's finals during first day of NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Gulf Shores, AL - Three individual Blue Raiders and a relay team all secured a spot in their respective finals on Saturday during the first day of competition at the 2018 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships held at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium, 18999 Oak Rd W, Gulf Shores, AL.

Kevin Hallmon, Safia Bright, Alexia DeHaven-Boyd and the men's 4x100 meter relay team of Hallmon, Christian Davis, Jaylyn McMurry and Holt Keeling all finished in the top eight of their respective events, advancing to Saturday's championship final in the process.


On the men's side, Hallmon was the top qualifier in the 200 meter dash preliminaries. His time of 20.71 seconds was .02 seconds faster than the second-place time in the field of 33 athletes. Hallmon will be the top seed heading into Saturday's final set for 4:20pmCT.

For the women, Bright will also be back for the 200 meter dash final as she ran a 23.79 in the preliminary trials, the second-fastest time of the day. Only Southern-New Orleans' (La.) Argyana Bolton had a quicker time at 23.57 seconds. Bright advances to Saturday's championship final scheduled for 4:10 p.m.

DeHaven-Boyd was the final Blue Raider individual to earn a championship spot as she punched her ticket to Saturday's final in the women's 400 meter hurdles event after capturing the eighth and final qualifying spot. She ran a 1:01.77 to finish third in her heat. DeHaven-Boyd returns for the final on Saturday at 3:10 p.m.

The final championship qualifier came from the Blue Raider men's 4x100 meter relay team of Hallmon, Davis, McMurry and Keeling as the squad secured a spot in Saturday's championship race after finishing in seventh place in the trials on Thursday. The quartet finished with a time of 41.36 seconds and returns for the final at 1:50 p.m.

The women's 4x100 meter relay team of Bright, DeHaven-Boyd, Leia Gregory and Annesha Harris finished in 14th place with a time of 47.99 seconds, 0.96 seconds behind the eighth and final qualifying time. Cameron Murphy finished in 27th place in the men's 400 meter hurdles event, crossing the line in 55.94 seconds.

In the field events, Harris collected an 18th-place finish in the women's long jump with her distance of 5.46 meters, which she achieved on her third and final attempt.

Paige Pettell finished in 29th place in the women's hammer throw final. She recorded a distance of 45.68 meters on her first throw, but failed to improve that distance after two fouls on her second and third attempts.

Pettell, Goabaone Mosheleketi, Bright, Hallmon and Gregory are all back in action for the second day of competition on Friday, starting with the women's shot put and men's long jump finals at 1 p.m. CT.
