Adair County school board met Thursday, May 17, 2018 in a brief but productive session, as the district conducted many end-of-fiscal-year items, got heads ups on graduation events, and recognized major figures in the history of the board, including a board member who was a catalyst for the most transformative years in the history of Adair County, Mike Harris, and the District's first Student Board Member, Lauren McQuaide.

Lisa Burton chairs the session

Chair Lisa Burton (Division 3) presided at the meeting, with the three other current board members, Terry Harvey ( 1), Daniel Adams (2) and Jonathan Gaskins (4), present. There was still an empty chair, the one so powerfully occupied by Division 5 member Mike Harris, who resigned when he moved out of the district, to Downtown Columbia. That vacancy will be filled by a Kentucky Department of Education appointee, who will serve until the November 6, 2018, general election winner is certified. Elections will also be decided for Divisions 1 and 3.

Artist Gabriel Salyers unable to lead pledge for ACMS

ACMS Principal Alma Rich said they'd selected student Gabriel Salyers, the first middle school student to ever win an Allstate art contest, to lead the pledge at this meeting but she was unable to be present due to family sickness. Mrs. Rich recommended everyone take an opportunity to see Gabby's work posted in the hallway at the middle school which shows her great talent. The pledge to begin the meeting was led by the Principal.

Business approved with unanimous votes - Agenda and Consent agenda.

The Agenda & Consent Agenda (See first 18 items here: Adair Co. Bd. of Education 17 May 2018 regular meeting - AGENDA) were unanimously approved by Members present.

Lauren McQuaide honored for tenure as Student Board Member

In the superintendent's announcements, Dr. Stephens called up Student Board Member Lauren McQuaide to honor her for, ". . . having served so well as our first student board member, with us since 2015," and continued, "I know many of you have noticed her picture hanging on the wall in this room. And we are presenting this picture to her so she can take it with her to her dorm room. She has been a blessing to us, bringing suggestions from the student perspective that we'd never have had without her. Lauren was the lead student member. Tell her replacement he has big shoes to fill." Lauren was given a certificate of appreciation and the framed picture.

Mike Harris honored for long service to board, district
Next the Superintendent called former board member Mike Harris to the front. She presented him with his desk plate with his name on it from his years as school board member. She said, "Mike has served the Adair County school system for over 18 years. In recognition of that we give him something to remember us by and a reminder of how much we appreciate his efforts."

Mike said, "Thank you all very much. I've served my time and I'm going home." His wife Laura who was with him said, "He really did enjoy his time on the school board and took a lot of pride in it. We can look back over the 18 years - he started when our kids were in kindergarten - and the campus doesn't look like the same place because so much has been accomplished. Thank you all."

BAVFD, KAVFD, and C/AC Fire Department, Crusade honored

Next to receive appreciation by Dr. Stephens were the three volunteer fire departments, Breeding Fire Department, Knifley Fire Department and Columbia Adair County Fire Department. She said to the representatives present, "for years and years, these men and women have worked so diligently on the Crusade for Children endeavors and have brought so much back, over $1 million to the school system -- so the board challenged each school to give to your efforts for the crusade as well. The schools have provided, with money collected at each, ACMS, ACPC, ACES, ACHS, bus drivers, mechanics, and the Central office, a grand total of $2,618.

"To add to your efforts. We know you have a major work in progress and we're proud to be part of it and say we want to at least double our amounts next year. Thank you so much. We'll all remember the first week in June to stop at all the roadblocks and go to all the fish fries to make sure and help the fire department with this effort."

Dr. Stephens announces CU Excellence in Teaching honorees for 2018

Dr. Stephens gave the board a heads up on the 2018 Adair County honorees for Excellence in Teaching Awards at Campbellsville University, saying "This Saturday, Phyllis (Academic Dean Phyllis Curry) and I will be going to Campbellsville University to share in honoring three teachers in the Excellence in Teaching Award, one from ACES, Courtney Grant; from the middle school Cindy Walker, and from the high school, Jennifer Martin. We are happy that they are being recognized. Dean Curry added that there can only be three from the school system so the fourth school will be recognized next year in rotation.

Last day of school is May 24, 2018

Dr. Stephens said, "A week from today's meeting is the last day of school. Just reminding our board members that graduation is Friday night at 7pmCT and please be there, same place as last year, by 6:45pm to put on caps and gowns."

Treasurer's report approved unanimously

The treasurer's report, presented by Treasurer Renae Smith, was mailed out to board members in advance and the vote to approve was unanimous. A New budget with any corrections and with everybody in place will be in September.

Chair Lisa Burton recognized Mr. David Jones for updates on buildings and grounds. He reported that The ACHS roof and also the entrance lighting project at ACMS and ACES will be completed this summer. He said Insurance is taking care of almost everything.

Board meeting in June will be Tue 26 Jun 2018
