By Dana Harmon Students and staff were very busy Wednesday at Adair County Primary Center, 158 Col. Casey Drive, Columbia, KY. On top of all the other activities going on at the end of the school year, the day was also ACPC PRIDE Spring Clean Up and Day of Service.

Throughout the day students and staff put on their vinyl gloves and spruced up the building and grounds at ACPC. They picked up trash, cleaned windows (lots of windows), wiped down playground equipment, raked mulch on the playground, weeded the plant beds, disinfected door handles, swept porches and cleaned scuff marks from our beautiful floors.

This day is part of an Eastern Kentucky PRIDE grant that was awarded to our school in October 2017, when we wrote a proposal to begin a school wide recycling program. A plastic and a paper recycling can was placed in each classroom, as well as cans in the hallways, cafeteria and office workspaces at ACPC.

Beginning at the end of October our Camp Casey PRIDE Club began collecting recyclables during afterschool from all over the building. With the support of the Adair County Recycling Center, those items were then placed outside, recorded and picked up twice a week. Also with support from Parkway Demolition and Recycling, we were able to keep track of the number of times our cardboard container was emptied.

Since October, ACPC has saved 91 fifty gallon bags of white paper, 93 fifty gallon bags of plastic, 24 fifty gallon bags of shredded paper and 27 fifty gallon bags of junk mail/catalogs from going to the landfill. Not to mention the 1280 cubic feet cardboard container at ACPC has been emptied 9 times since November. That's a lot that the "Little Kids Who Do Big Things" at ACPC have managed to collect for recycling instead of sending to the landfill!!! Many thanks go to the teachers and staff at ACPC for doing their part to teach this important lesson in stewardship.
