Are we bypassing spring, going to summer temperatures?

By Linda Waggener

This week I was asked if I'd noticed we have bypassed spring and gone straight to summer weather -- 90 degrees in May. Yes, it has been duly noticed and I don't like it one bit. This is not a scientific report, just an observation, but a serious one.

A few years ago I worried about temperatures reaching 90 degrees in early June instead of late July and August. Now 90-degree heat has moved up into May. I want the full season of spring returned to Kentucky. I want 70-degree temperatures, only moving into the 80s as we get very near to Independence Day.

July and August temperatures and humidity should stay solely in those two months and not spread over more. We can just about manage six to eight weeks of 90s and 100s with humidity equal to temperatures. We can go to Alaska for a long vacation. We can have a summer home in the UP. We can enjoy cave tours during mid days.

But we may not be able to bear up if what used to be just July/August Kentucky weather moves to include the months of May and June. I'm reminded of a comment from years ago from one suffering in July/August extreme heat/humidity. Discussing weather-related miseries, she said, "I tell you this climax 'bout to kill me!!! It's the humility makes it so horrible!"

2018-05-16 - New Columbia, Adair County KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
The weather changed just as predicted this afternoon. Dark clouds made entry into Adair County from the west and a thunderstorm soon joined them. Predictions are that we will have heavy rain tomorrow, Thursday, 17 May 2018, mixed with periods of heavy fog and then more rain. Please drive safely.
