KY 61, in Adair/Cumberland/Metcalfe to get 'Cape Seal' paving Paving to begin next week on KY 61 in Adair, Cumberland and Metcalfe Counties. Expect one lane work zones. Cape seal is a preventive maintenance process aimed at extending the life of aging pavement by applying a chip seal followed by a thin asphalt overlay. By Amber Hale, Public Information Officer Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 8, Somerset, KY SOMERSET, KY (Wed - May 15, 2018) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 Office advises motorists that beginning next week crews will begin performing paving operations on KY 61 in Adair, Cumberland and Metcalfe counties. Work will be performed starting in Cumberland County at mile point 16.69 (south of KY 704) extending north through Metcalfe County and ending at mile point 4.36 (north of Gowen Road) in Adair County. During these operations, the roadway will be reduced to one lane with traffic controlled by flaggers. The pavement operations will consist of a process known as cape seal. Cape seal is a preventive maintenance process aimed at extending the life of aging pavement by applying a chip seal followed by a thin asphalt overlay. The chip seal begins with an asphalt emulsion sprayed on the roadway followed by a layer of coarse stone spread evenly over the emulsion. This portion of the application is left in place for a few days to allow the stone to set and for open traffic to further seat the aggregate materials into the emulsion. After the curing periods, a thin asphalt overlay is paved onto the roadway. Motorists are advised that during the process drivers will encounter a chip and seal surface for a short period. Due to the loose rock, speed limits will be reduced from 55 mph to 25 mph. Once the final stages of the application are applied, drivers can expect a smooth driving surface. Work is expected to begin next week and be completed in approximately four weeks. Work may be adjusted for inclement weather or other unforeseeable delays. Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to allow extra time in reaching their destination.
