LWC softball ends regular season in split with CU at Sparks Park

Blue Raiders win game 1 of doubleheader at Marilyn D. Sparks Park, 12-2; Campbellsville wins game 2, 4-2.

COLUMBIA, KY - (Sun 29 Apr 2018) - The No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team closed out its regular season with a doubleheader split against No. 4-ranked Campbellsville (KY) Sunday at Marilyn D. Sparks Park.

The Blue Raiders (37-12, 17-7 MSC) took game one 12-2 in six innings and fell to the Tigers (41-8, 23-5 MSC) 4-2 in game two. Lindsey Wilson totaled 17 hits over the two game while Campbellsville recorded 12.




Game 1: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 12, No. 4 Campbellsville 2 (6 innings)
After the first two Blue Raider batters were struck out to begin the bottom of the first, Alaeni Ray reached on walk. Sydney Fourman reached on an error by the Campbellsville first baseman and Ray advanced to third. Cassie Matlock then hit a single to centerfield scoring Ray to give Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

Brianna Scott reached on a one-out walk in the top of the second and then advanced to second on a stolen. Dana Adkins singled into right field which moved Scott to third, an error by the Blue Raider right fielder allowed Scott to score to tie the game at 1-1.

After back-to-back singles by Kelsie Cornelius and Cassie Kooker to begin the Lindsey Wilson second, Callum Pilgrim reached on a fielder's choice, Cornelius advanced to third and Kooker advanced to second on an error by the Tiger second baseman. Lyric Houston hit a two-RBI single to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead. Ray single to deep right-center field increasing the Blue Raider lead to 5-1.

After Jacqueline Roof singled, back-to-back walks loaded the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Ryley Whitney singled to center to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 5-2. Kalli Harris increased the Blue Raider lead to 7-2 with a home run in the bottom of the fifth. Lindsey Wilson added five runs in the sixth inning capped off by a Pilgrim three-run home run to enforce the run rule.

Abby Whelan improved to 8-0 on the season pitching all six innings allowing one earned run on four hits with three strikeouts.


Game 2: No. 11 Lindsey Wilson 2, No. 4 Campbellsville 4

After Roof led off the game with a home run to give Campbellsville a 1-0 lead, Annabelle Ramirez struck out the next three batters to end the inning. Pilgrim led off the bottom of the first with a double. Houston bunted which advanced Pilgrim to third, on the same play a throwing error by the Campbellsville third baseman allowed both Pilgrim and Houston to score giving the Blue Raiders a 2-1 lead.

Campbellsville had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the second and was unable to capitalize. Following a strikeout, back-to-back singles put runners on first and second. An error by the Blue Raider right fielder loaded the bases. Ramirez then retired the next two batters to escape the bases loaded jam.

Rebecca Miller led off the top of third with a single up the middle. Alexis Smith hit a two-run home run on a 0-1 count to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Smith hit an RBI-single in the top of the fourth to increase the Campbellsville lead to 4-2.

Kooker led off the Blue Raiders in the bottom of the fifth with an infield single. Pilgrim reached on a fielder's choice and Kooker advanced to second. After back-to-back outs, Fourman was walked to load the bases. A fielder's choice ended the Blue Raiders scoring threat

Ramirez fell to 12-7 on the season pitching all seven innings giving up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out six.
