Darryl Smith: Blue bird is actually Indigo Bunting Kentucky is right in the center of their range Darryl Smith writes: Hi Ed. That's a male Indigo Bunting. They are small birds, about the size of a Goldfinch. The males are bright blue in the summer, but their plumage turns brown in the winter. The female is always brown. Oddly enough, almost every time I see one it's sitting on the road. They are seed eaters, but if they are visiting my feeders I'm missing them. Maybe they are just shy... The have a huge range, and Kentucky is right in the center of it.
