By Linda Waggener

Leaving tonight's City Council meeting, we were honored to meet the new police dog, Gunner, a full time member of the Columbia Police Department.

He is assigned to Officer John Dial who says, "when Gunner is with our family, he is just like any other family dog."

When he is on the job it is not safe to make direct eye contact nor sudden movements around the dog.

Gunner, 23 months old, is trained to find five drug scents: Ecstasy, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and meth amphetamine. Meth is said to be the biggest local problem related to drug addictions.

Gunner is to live 24/7/365 with the Dial family and John says he and his sons love the dog.

Gunner will be able to search and find illegal drugs in vehicle stops and in lockers, etc., and he's also trained in officer protection, a safeguard for police officers.
