Gov. & First Lady Bevin kickoff April Prevent Child Abuse Month Gov. Bevin and First Lady Participate in PCAK Ceremony. Matt Bevin and First Lady Glenna Bevin joined representatives from Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky (PCAK) and WellCare Health Plans this afternoon to help launch Child Abuse Prevention Month. Attendees gathered on the front lawn of the State Capitol to "plant" more than 3,000 pinwheels, the national symbol for child abuse prevention. Each pinwheel is representative of 20 live births in Kentucky each year. "These pinwheels are symbolic of something bigger than simply a piece of plastic and a stick of wood. They are symbolic of lives of children in the Commonwealth," said Gov. Bevin. "Tragically, child abuse does occur on a regular basis, and we have a responsibility to take action and put this issue on the radar screen of our communities." "We want to ensure that every child has a healthy home life," said Mrs. Bevin. "Child abuse is one of our nation's most serious problems, and we are determined to end it in Kentucky. We need everyone's involvement to help spread awareness of child abuse and do all we can to prevent it." Established in 1987, PCAK is the Commonwealth's leading organization aimed at preventing child abuse. Wellcare provides government-sponsored managed care services, primarily through Medicaid and other programs. "At WellCare, we work every day to eliminate barriers to healthcare for all Kentuckians," said Bill Jones, WellCare of Kentucky president. "We are especially focused on the needs of our members in foster care who have often experienced abuse or neglect. That's why we support children and families through our foster care and adoption programs and partner with organizations like PCAK to help break the long term cycles of abuse. The work and support they provide to agencies around the Commonwealth is saving lives, and we are honored to be a partner in that success." Following the planting of pinwheels, Gov. Bevin proclaimed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Kentucky. He urged all citizens, civic organizations, faith groups, medical facilities and businesses to work to support families in preventing child abuse and strengthening their communities.
