Varmint story: Something you don't see every day

By Darryl Smith

I was outside and heard my dog barking at something and thought she had treed a squirrel (I thought she had outgrown that in her advanced age) but when I looked over it was a groundhog that had climbed up to safety.

I didn't even know they could do that but a Google search returns many pictures and stories. Apparently they will climb to escape predators, to survey their surroundings, and to raid fruit trees.

This one was about 12 feet up.

Before I researched it, I took some pictures of it and I had to zoom because I didn't want to spook it into climbing higher, not being able to get down, me having to call the fire department as if it was a cat up a tree etc.

Having had my sanity called into question a few times, before I wasn't relishing the idea of being the guy that called 911 over what Bill Murray referred to as "Varmint Cong" in the movie Caddyshack.

Here are some pictures (attached) for your enjoyment.

Have a wonderful Sunday.

Hoppy, Darryl Smith's gritty little dog - bane of groundhogdom

2018-03-04 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Darryl Smith.
Hello again, Ed. I'm happy to fulfill your request for a picture of the treeing dog. She's a small shepherd mix named "Hoppy" (long story, that was her name when we adopted her 10 years ago. She used to be a fearless squirrel-chaser when she had an audience but I looked out one day to see her "sunning" and a chipmunk was actually going over her instead of around her on numerous food stashing trips.) Here she is overflowing the Shih Tzu's little bed because the Chihuahuas took over her big bed. The Shih Tzu took over MY bed... - DARRYL SMITH
