This morning Adair County Elementary School was the place to be when the Adair County Retired Teachers' Association President, Ellen Zornes and Essay Chair, Teresa Roy, announced its winner of the school and school district fifth grade essays answering why "My Grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year."

We were pleased to present Emma Helm, daughter of Anna Viers and Tim Bottoms and granddaughter of Sandy Smith, the grandparent of her essay, with the first place award.
We also recognized three other talented fifth grade students, Jazlyn Kemp, daughter of Josh and Jennifer Kemp; Piper Kemp, daughter of Nick and Whitney Kemp and Autumn Price, daughter of Ashley Price, who wrote very impressive essays honoring their grandparent. You'll be hearing more about Emma Helm as her essay advances in the state Retired Teachers' Association competition.

The Adair County Retired Teachers' Association is pleased to announce that Emma Helm, 5th grade student in Vickie Houk's class at Adair County Elementary School (ACES), is the 2017-2018 Middle Cumberland District Grandparent of the Year Essay Contest Winner. Students submitted essays answering why "My Grandparent should be the AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year." Emma's essay was chosen from all fifth grade winners in the Middle Cumberland District. Her essay has been submitted to the Kentucky Retired Teachers' Association for state competition.

The essay competition is a unique way to recognize the significant contributions that older Kentuckians make toward shaping the lives and values of youth across the Commonwealth. Our local Retired Teachers' Association organizes the "AARP Grandparent of the Year" essay contest by securing local school participation, promoting the activity and serving as local judges. Retired teacher,Teresa Roy, serves as the Adair County chairperson.
