S.T.E.A.M night at ACES - kids wanted stay to do more math S.T.E.A.M night at Adair County Elementary School was Tue 30 Jan 2018. It was a successful night of learning. Click on headline for story with photos By Debbie Cowan What do a trebuchet, a potato clock, celery, geodes and slime have in common? Adair Elementary students and family members can tell you that each of those items were featured as exhibits at the recent Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math Night at ACES. This family involvement event, sponsored by ACES Title I program, Family Resource Center, Science Department and Camp SAFARI, featured family science projects and displays in the cafeteria as well as many hands–on activities to actively engage students and families in shared learning. Participating students enjoyed creating artwork with a pendulum, exploring electrical circuits and writing codes for robots. Parents and students had opportunities to explore technology in the computer lab, test a roller coaster and make slime. Snacks for the night included an edible solar system and chemical reaction tea and candy that could be consumed only after using it to learn about fractions. The event was a big success, with great attendance and many smiles. Staff members that organized the event were thrilled to overhear a student remark to their parent that they didn’t want to leave, but “wanted to do more math”. By the way, in case you were wondering, a trebuchet is a catapult or “a machine used in medieval siege warfare”.
