Incumbent First District Congressman James Comer, Tompinsville, KY filed for the Republican nomination for the office on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, in the office of Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes.

Congressman Comer is the second candidate to file for the office. Samuel "Sam" Gaskins, of Hopkinsville, KY, filed for the Democratic nomination on November 15, 2018.

The deadline for filing for multi-county and statewide offices which require a primary is January 30, 2018.
