William H. Compton, WWII veteran, Weed, KY (1922-2017)

He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, a U.S. Army Veteran, who served three years in the South Pacific during World War II, and a mechanic, body man, and a self-employed contractor. He was a member of one of the great, rock-solid West Adair County families, the son of the late Arlin & Creo Nell Roach Compton, and the widower of Ruby Burris Compton

William Harold Compton, 95, of Elizabethtown, formerly of Columbia and Campbellsville, died Friday, December 15, 2017 at 4:51pmCT at the Carl M. Brashear Radcliff Veterans Center in Radcliff.

Funeral service for Wiliam H. Compton will be Monday, December 18, 2017 at 12pmNoonCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Retired Chaplain Jim Swim officiating Burial will be in Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, with full military honors presented by V.F.W. Post 6097. Visitation will be after 10amCT, Monday, December 18, 2017.



William H. Compton, WWII veteran, Weed, KY (1922-2017)


He was born August 20, 1922, in Weed, Adair County, KY. He was the son of the late Arlin & Creo Nell Roach Compton. He died Friday, December 15, 2017, in Radcliff, Hardin County, KY, at the age of 95 years, three months, and 25 days.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Burris Compton; three brothers; Herschel T., James Allen and Cecil Compton; two sisters, Ida Estelle Christensen and Leo Nell Bartley; and a special nephew; Leon Moore.

He was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, a U.S. Army Veteran, serving three years in the South Pacific during World War II, a mechanic, body man and a self-employed contractor.

Survivors include:
  • Four sisters: Sophia Alice Henderson of Indianapolis, IN; Edna Ozella (Elmer) Mayes of Venice, FL; Viola Dee (Don) Osborne of Campbellsville, KY; and Nordina (Michael) Wilkins of Elizabethtown, KY

  • A special niece: Elizabeth Coomer

  • And several other relatives and friends

Memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society. These may be left at the funeral home.
