Mystery Church: Columbia-Union, now Living by Faith

By Ed Waggener

Of course the Mystery Church photo, posted August 8, 2017, was no challenge for Adair County Historian Mike Watson, whose letter contained all correct information but differed slightly from what was defined in the question - only slightly.

Subsequent letters on the heels of his answer revealed just how tough the question was. The church style is one replicated all over South Central Kentucky - maybe across America, and we felt that would be a study in itself, valuable enough to continue the mystery, one, to see if anyone would associate the author we were looking for - Albert Capwell Wyckoff - one of the most prolific and definitely one of the most widely known of the Adair County Authors. (See Adair County authors: Albert C. Wyckoff by, of all people, Mike Watson.

If we had continued Mystery, we would have learned more about the the architecture of the time, and might have even gained the "Critical Mess," which would have led to new insight into why so many buildings are, at times, built on the same theme.

Among the guesses - were several for Union Chapel Church near Glens Fork; Old Concord Church at Fairplay, Hutchison Community Church; Pleasant Hill Church near Montpelier, KY; Caldwell Chapel Church on Caldwell Ridge between Knifley and Barnett's Creek; the Spout Springs Church, no longer in existence, and a classic from Charles Marshburn of what it isn't, the Vatican.

Those churches are all in Adair County, KY, but based on the photo, the church could easily have been taken for hundreds, maybe thousands more. They were all helpful, and very good information.

We hope someone will delve further in a scholar way into why this particular church style was the way it was.

And we'd like to learn whether others of this style were sited as this one was, taking advantage of prevailing winds to get the sanctuary cool with windows cracked 4 inches at the top and 4 inches on the bottom, so that only the hottest days of the year required the air conditioning of the day, fans provided by local funeral homes.

We wonder. Comments are welcome.

So, it's most likely in Adair County, KY. It is associated with a famous Adair County author. Do you remember it? Do you know what has happened in the nearly 75 years since the photo was taken? If you do, send your answer using the "Comments" link with this photo. - Ed & Linda

Mystery Church: What a difference 6 decades make

2017-09-10 - Living by Faith Church, 3041 Edmonton Road, Columbia, KY - Photo Original by Joseph Allison, Nu-Art Studio; Latest by Ed Waggener.
The church on the left was, in 1956, the Union campus of the Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church, after the two churches merged. Later it was the Gradyville United Methodist Church, and today is home to Living by Faith Church. A number of changes have been made, including the addition of a Fellowship Hall at the rear of the church, the heating system no long requires a chimney and was removed when the new roof was added. Adair County Historian Mike Watson correctly identified the mystery church, and, was correct in naming E.L. Dohoney as a famous author identified with the sanctuary, though we had in mind Albert Capwell Wycoff, who was pastor of Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church from 1946-1953 according to N.M. Berley - and hoped someone might also find an association with Mark Twain's Lampton lineage. The photo is from a program booklet, "Columbia-Union Presbyterian Church, Columbia, KY, 1803-1956" by historian N.M. Berley.
