In-memory table for the grandmothers covered with violets

2017-08-05 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
Christmas in July Waggener reunion guests are welcome to eat at any table, anywhere in the house, on the screened in porch, or on the patio at the home of Mitzi and Ricky Bault, but just not at this table. The round table in the bay window is in remembrance of both Mitzi's grandmothers, Waggener and McKinley, both named Audrey, and both loved to grow violets in their homes.

Christmas in July celebration: 05 Aug 2017

2017-08-06 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
A moment in one of Adair County's long running family reunions - families related to the late E.P. & Audrey Waggener celebrate "Christmas in July." The celebration has been held in other locales, along the years, but mostly at the favorite gathering place, the home of Ricky & Mitzi Bault, overlooking Russell Creek - the little kids quite rationally refer to it as 'the River' - and Green Hills Road. That's Mitzi in the back left corner, and Ricky in the back right corner. Hilda Joyce Willis Jenkins is addressing the group during the Christmas gift exchange. - EW

Lois Cunningham vows Square Meals Cafe will open again

2017-08-06 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
'Cousin' Lois Cunningham, a close ally of Mitzi Bault and Wilma Jean Cravens Waggener - and therefore an honorary cousin, or 'Cudden' as it's properly mumbled in Adair County attended the "Christmas in July - this year in early August - was her usual radiant self. But she was overcoming what was for her, and for dozens of, hungry kids, a very disappointing day when the Farmers Market on the Square opened without the Square Meals Cafe. She said she is determined it won't happen again. She said that for some of the county's youngest, the Square Meals Breakfasts and Lunches might be the only nutritional meal of the day. Right now, a Food Trailer, some financial help and moral support are needed. Thanks to the City of Columbia, the kitchen in City Hall could be used for preparation of the meals, she said. Details of her plan and needs for Saturday, August 11, 2017, will be provided later. - Ed Waggener (For now: If you'd like to help perpetuate the "Square Meals Cafe," Contact CM at 270-250-2730 and we'll pass the information along to Lois Cunningham, whether it be information on a Food Trailer possibility, financial help, or food.

Family elder, Ralph Roy Waggener, relaxes at Christmas in July . . .

2017-08-06 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
Ralph Roy Waggener, who continues to edit the popular It's Just for a Smile News enjoyed the vista from Ricky & Mitzi Bault's swimming pool deck area, gazing over to the Sulphur Hole on Russell Creek, remembering with family elder Jim Richards what a role the old swimming pool had played through the years, long before the idea of a City Pool at the old fairgrounds was hatched. The photo was taken at Christmas in July, this year in August, an annual homecoming for children of the late E.P. & Audrey Waggener, as well as other close kin. - EW

Youngest at the reunion, Clayton Richards, enjoys pool

2017-08-07 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c).
Clayton Richards had this pool to himself a lot of the Christmas in July reunion afternoon while the bigger kids got to go to "the river" a short distance away. The later reunion date, August this year, kept some away who were already in school mode, but all who could make it did, and a good time was had by all. - LW

Jim Richards: Remember Sulphur Swimming hole as deeper

2017-08-08 - McKinley Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com(c). A second family elder, in addition to Ralph Roy Waggener, at Christmas in July 2017 - this year in August - Jim Richards, was most impressed by a visit to one of his boyhood swimming holes, at the confluence of Sulphur & Russell Creeks. He thought the hole seem shallower than 'in his day' the 1940's and 50's, and was amazed that there was a whole lot of kayaking going on; nobody had heard of a kayak in Adair County when he was a boy - much less did it. His youngest grandson organized the trip to "the river," where he met a future president of the United States, Kasey Blue, who had organized his parents, Tiffany & Eddie Kessler for their family outing. The Richardses were impressed with the ongoing popularity of what was once a popular retreat, and is becoming more so, today, with enthusiasm for paddle trail activities exploding. - EW
