Click on headline for compete report with photo(s), links By Ed Waggener The Adair County School Board held a fast-paced, very productive meeting last night, with several major steps taken, including the election of the board secretary, announcements and reminders and readiness steps reported for the beginning of the 2017-18 School Term on August 10, 2017, recognition of Adair County Fire Departments and the Crusade for Children, and progress reports from the District's Architect and Buildings and Grounds Director. Superintendent Stephens Report Dr. Pam Stephens announced several items relative to the opening of school, which will be just three weeks from last night's meeting. She first recognized the Feeding America Backpack program, which will provide meals so kids won't go hungry over the weekend. She reported that the fund has $5,000 to start the school year, including $3,000 in a start-up grant, $1,000 in an FRYSC grant, and $1,000 won in a drawing held in Bowling Green by Steve Turner, which will be included in the program. For those who would like give added funds to the program, Steve Turner said that $120 will provide the home nutrition over weekends for a year. She also introduced Charles Crawhorn, chair of the Adair County Crusade for Children who held a ceremonial presentation to Anita Goode, Special Education Director for Adair County Schools, for $49,000, with Kim Pelly, chair of Kody's 5K Run, present and recognized. Crawhorn announced a more coordinated effort for the 2018 Crusade in Adair County, with Columbia/Adair County, Knifley, and Breeding fire departments working together on roadblocks and special events. Crawhorn said that several special events are planned during the year in an effort to set a new record for the crusade. The highest previous record was approximately $55,000, he said. Board Member Terry Harvey, Chief of the Breeding Fire Department, commended Charlie Crawhorn and Kim Pelley, saying, "These guys are doing great things," and committed his department to the unified effort. Kim Pelley said that Kody's 5K run has raised $5,535.71 in 2014, $5,007.00 in 2015, and $4,825.19 in 2016, and hoped to set a record this year. She said that the $49,000 given this year will allow the school board to buy the third school bus provided by Crusade money. Later in the evening, the board voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Stephens as secretary to the board, a position traditionally served by Superintendents. Public Comment Donald Hare introduced 'Stop the Bleeding' program during the Public Comment Segment. He told the board the idea is just for consideration at this time, and said that the Boyle County School District will be utilizing the program this year. Stop the Bleeding programs provide tourniquets and bandages and other emergency medical supplies for each school room, which could be used in case of gunmen attacking a school. He said that there are estimates that such a program could have reduced casualties in some of the worst school ground massacres by as much as 50%. (Related: Stop the Bleeding Coalition) Dr. McQuaide given contract to teach pre-med physics The Board voted unanimously to contract with Dr. Glen McQuaide for physics instruction for Adair County High School students planning to enter medical school. Dr. McQuaide, a resident of Columbia, KY, and professor at Campbellsville University, will provide two hour in person instruction on three days of each week during the school year. Academic Dean Phyllis Curry said that in the past, Dr. McQuaide had helped students with on-line instruction in physics, but said, "That was good, but we know that our students will be much better grounded in physics with personal instruction." On a motion by Terry Harvey (1), with a second by Jonathan Gaskins (4), the proposal was unanimously approved. Mike Sparkman of Alt/32 gives update on ACHS renovations Mike Sparkman, Alt/32 consulting architect for the District, updated the board on progress on the Adair County High School HVAC and Roof projects and the new parking lot at Adair County Primary Center. He said that the ACHS projects are being coordinated to the benefit of both the HVAC installer and roofing contractors' advantages. He said he expects the work to be done before the start of school, and, barring unforeseen circumstances, may be as much as a week early. Sparkman noted that the difficult part of the work came early on the roof. "Once the cap sheet work begins," he said, "you'll see a rapid finish to the project." He told the board that he was well pleased with the work of the contractors. The quality of the work and the safety measures are excellent, he said. David Jones gives update on building and grounds District Maintenance Supervisor David Jones updated the board on preparations for the opening of school. These include completion of lighting for the third of three marquees at campus entrances - the newest off the bypass on Col Casey Drive - and said that Taylor County RECC has assured him that lighting along Col. Casey Drive can be completed by the start of the school year. Mr. Jones said that the new Adair County Primary Center parking lot is ready for blacktopping, and expected that to be done by the start of school. He said that painting and other campus brightening is being completed in time for the new year. Financial Officer Renae Smith gives report The District's Financial Officer reported a beginning cash balance for the month of June of $4,130,560.43.
