Families invited to StoryWalk(c) at Jim Blair Center By Debbie Cowan, Family Resource Center Coordinator Adair County Elementary School, 870 Indian Drive, Columbia KY 42728 Families are invited to take a StoryWalk(c) at the Jim Blair Community Recreation Center, 901 Hudson St; Columbia, KY. The long, lazy days of summer offer great opportunities for family time and learning outside of the school classroom. One such opportunity is being offered locally at the Jim Blair Community Recreational Center as the walking track at the center recently became the site of a unique family activity known as a StoryWalk(c). A StoryWalk(c) provides "an innovative and delightful way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time". It is designed to encourage parents to take young children outdoors to enjoying reading stories together. Sturdy posts have been installed around the half-mile track at the center and laminated pages from a children's book are attached to the posts. Families are encouraged to walk and read the book as they circle the track. As a special bonus, families who complete the walk are invited to visit the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY, to receive a free copy of the book that they read while walking. The StoryWalk(c) at the Jim Blair Center has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of several organizations. The post, funded by grants monies of the local Health Departments' WATCH Coalition, were manufactured by Adair County High School welding students under the direction of Mr. Barney Taylor and installed by the Adair High Football program. The Adair Public Library provides books and oversight for the program. Columbia-Adair Parks and Recreation Board members and staff have been instrumental in coordinating the program and other agencies such as the ACES Family Resource Center, Fiscal Court representatives and the ASAP Coalition have provided support and guidance. For more information about the StoryWalk(c), families can contact Ms. LeeAnn Jessie at the Adair Public Library at 270-384- 2472. The StoryWalk(c) Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT in collaboration with Kellogg Hubbard Library. This story was posted on 2017-06-12 13:36:53
