LWC's Largest Graduating Class at Spring Commencement Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton will deliver Spring Semester address Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Venus Popplewell Director of Public Relations, Lindsey Wilson College Lindsey Wilson College will cap off its largest class in school history at this year's spring commencement. The liberal arts college's 2017 spring commencement ceremony will be at 10amCT Saturday, May 13, 2017 in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY. Kentucky's fifty-seventh and current Lieutenant Governor Jenean Hampton will deliver the spring commencement address. Hampton will also receive an honorary doctorate from the college. Also receiving honorary doctorate degrees will be recently retired staff member Sue Breeding Coomer who served Lindsey Wilson College from 1968-2017 and Director of Library Services Philip Hanna who joined the LWC faculty in 1993 and will retire at the end of the summer. LWC will award 281 degrees at its 105th commencement ceremony. Combined with the 407 degrees the college awarded last winter, Lindsey Wilson will award a total of 688 undergraduate and graduate degrees this school year, the most in the 114-year history of The United Methodist-affiliated college. The college awarded a record 664 degrees in 2014. Lt. Gov. Hampton is the first African-American to hold any statewide office in Kentucky. She earned an industrial engineering degree in 1985 from Wayne State (Mich.) University and then served in the Air Force for seven years as a computer systems officer, writing computer code and testing software. Following her military service, Hampton began a 19-year career in the corrugated packaging industry. During that time, she earned a master's of business degree from the University of Rochester (NY), with concentrations in marketing, entrepreneurship and electronic commerce. A nearly 50-year employee of the college, Sue Breeding Coomer served five presidents and 10 academic deans. She most recently served as the college's Registrar, a position she held since 1986. When Coomer joined the LWC staff, registration and scheduling were done manually. After the college adopted computer technology to manage the work of the registrar's office - Coomer successfully transitioned operations to two new computer systems. She saw enrollment grow from a low of 200 students in the 1970s to more than 2,600 students today. Phil Hanna began his tenure at LWC in 1993. As Hanna prepares to step down as Director of Library Services, a position he has held since 1999, he leaves behind a department that has become integrated in all aspects of the college. Hanna manages a library that serves not only the A.P. White Campus in Columbia but also the students at the college's 26 community campuses. Hanna is also responsible for LWC's well-known Cultural Affairs Series - a year-long series that brings authors, musicians and other performers to campus. Following the commencement ceremony, the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association will hold a reception for graduates and guests in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive. To accommodate the large crowd expected for winter commencement, the ceremony will be shown on closed-circuit television in the Norma & Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, 402 Helen Flatt Drive, Columbia, KY. The ceremony will also be carried lived on DuoCounty Channel 2 and on lindsey.edu via its Stretch channel.
