JOY Ministries asks for help for local homeless families

This ministry asks for pledges of $5 per month from all the families above the poverty line to provide help with rent, utilities, shelter, food, clothing and toiletries to residents in our area living on the edge of homelessness or already in a state of homelessness. Pick up a "Families for $5" pledge card on the square or at the Adair County Public Library.

There are many ways to share with others in need, but J.O.Y. Ministries is making an appeal which directly helps Adair County families. It is also a support base for the churches of Adair County which frequently are the first to know of an individuals’ need for help.

J.O.Y. Ministries has announced their Families for $5 Campaign to run through January, 2017. Director of Finances, Maggie Coleman, says, "We are hoping to raise $450 more per month in income to cover the demand for help from those in crisis during the winter months. We will use the money to provide help with rent, utilities, shelter, food, clothing and toiletries to residents in our area living on the edge of homelessness or already in a state of homelessness."

The ministry is asking Adair County families to pledge $5 per month or more to the J.O.Y. Ministries Crisis Resource Center. Maggie said, "If every family above the poverty line gave $5 per month, we would have an operating budget of $120,000. Right now we have a budget of $14,000." She says, "If your family is looking for a worthy cause to which to commit in the coming year, we are it! Kids can see their pennies and change go directly into their community to help their school friends and family members."

JOY Ministries Crisis Resource Center is fully moved into its new location, the former cafe at 212 Public Square in Columbia, KY. "By God’s grace and provision, we signed a lease with Ellen Hingle to rent the former Harvest Café," Coleman says. "This location brought us more space, a larger kitchen, and better accessibility and visibility. Special thanks go to Ellen for committing to find a Godly purpose for her property and allowing our ministry to use the space.

We are still unsure of just what our monthly expenses will be in this new space, but we are trusting that God will provide, as He has done so abundantly since our opening in April."

She says JOY welcomes all donations, but pledging money on a monthly basis, as in the Famlies for $5 commitment, as opposed to just giving money from time to time, is very important, as it allows J.O.Y. to create a more accurate budget, and, therefore, be wiser and more efficient stewards of the funds entrusted to them to help those in crisis.

Volunteers for the holiday season will be needed since Lindsey students will be gone December 12-21 and January 4-13. Please contact Krystal Cundiff at 270-634-4612 if you can volunteer for a few hours during this time.

The CRC is open Mondays 12-5, Tuesdays 10-3, Wednesdays 12-5 and Thursdays 10-3 until December 22nd and will remain closed until January 3rd for the holidays.

Maggie says donors can pick up a Families for $5 pledge card at the Center during hours open, or at the Adair County Public Library, 307 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. Just return it to the Center or mail it to JOY Ministries, P.O. Box 114, Columbia, KY 42728. Pledged donations can come by check or cash to either location, but should clearly state the donor’s name and “to be used for the Families for $5 campaign,” so that the Center can sort the information properly for tax purposes. A family may give the amount in one lump sum, monthly, or quarterly — it is their decision.

To donate, get more information or to serve as a volunteer, call the Crisis Resource Center at 270-380-1808.
