LWC Volleyball wins five-set thriller over Georgetown

By Chris Wells

No. 5-ranked Lindsey Wilson volleyball won the sprint to 15 tonight in a five-set win over No. 8-ranked Georgetown (KY) at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders (16-1, 7-1 in the Mid-South Conference) scored the match's final two points to win the decisive set 15-13.

Georgetown (18-3, 8-1) showed tremendous fight, battling back from two sets down and 13-9 in the final set. After scoring four straight points to tie the set at 13-13, Eileen Acuna provided one of her team-high 14 kills to set up match point for the Blue Raiders. Elly Burke dropped her serve just inside the back line to give Lindsey Wilson the 25-21, 25-15, 20-25, 16-25, 15-13 win.

Lindsey Wilson overcame a poor offensive effort over the last three sets to avenge its only loss of the season. The Blue Raiders managed an attacking percentage of just .039 over the last three frames compared to hitting .377 in the first two sets.

Georgetown ended the match out-hitting Lindsey Wilson .183 to .166 -- the only match this season the Blue Raiders failed to out-hit their opponent.

Lindsey Wilson started strong, winning six of the last seven points to take the opening set 25-21. The Blue Raider defense, coupled with a pair of Georgetown errors, enabled Lindsey Wilson to dominate the final stages of the set.

Acuna and Grace Blomstedt started the run with a block followed by a Burke kill and a Caitlyn Tino service ace. Two more Lindsey Wilson blocks and two Georgetown errors helped Lindsey Wilson capture the set for a 1-0 lead.

Lindsey Wilson carried that momentum into the second set.

The Blue Raiders never trailed in the set en route to the 25-15 win. Lindsey Wilson hit .484 in the set while combining for three team blocks -- forcing six Georgetown attack errors -- to take the 2-0 lead.

Five different Blue Raiders -- Blomstedt, Burke, Madison Molitor, Makenzie Montano and Lauren Streets -- recorded three kills each in the set.

Georgetown turned the tide in the third set.

The Tigers claimed nine of the first 12 points of the set and never trailed the rest of the way.

Lindsey Wilson climbed within a point (10-9) in the third, but a Georgetown timeout stemmed the Blue Raider spurt. The Tigers used an 8-2 run over the next 10 point and were never seriously threatened in the set in a 25-20 win.

The Blue Raiders hit just .105 in the set -- committing seven attack errors -- while Georgetown recorded 15 kills and a .233 attacking percentage to take the set.

The sluggish offensive play continued into the fourth set for Lindsey Wilson.

The Blue Raiders hit -.057 in the fourth -- marking the first time this season they recorded a negative attacking set. While Lindsey Wilson struggled, Georgetown hit a match-best .243 in the set, building as much as a nine-point lead on three different occasions on its way to the 25-16 fourth-set win.

Despite the Georgetown surge, Lindsey Wilson found a way in the decisive set.

The Blue Raiders sprinted out to a 4-1 lead and led throughout until the Georgetown run tied the set at 13-13. Acuna and Burke provided the heroics in the end, extending the Blue Raiders' home-winning streak to 43 straight matches.

Sheets joined Acuna with double-digit kills, finishing with 13. Montano served up 44 assists while adding 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Defensively, Tino recorded a team-high 20 digs while Blomstedt added a solo block and four block assists.

Four Tigers recorded double-digit kills led by Sarah Snyder's 15. Sarah Bell matched Montano's double-double with 45 assists and 14 digs.
