Veterans from VFW Post 6097 donated 36 uniforms to Adair County's new Jr. Reserve Officers' Training Corps program Wednesday afternoon, saving the district more than $2,000 in the process. The donation includes pants, shirts, undershirts, belts, patrol caps, patches, and ribbons for students to earn.

The program's instructor says the VFW's contribution is an example of the community's great support for ROTC in Adair County. "They have helped after-school clubs by providing uniforms for the first year," he says. "We're very thankful and very grateful for the support."

Post 6097 Cmdr. Joe Hare says the decision to help the new program was an easy one, and gives credit to an Adair County High School senior for helping raise the funds. "Almost 90-percent of the money we used to buy these uniforms came from the 5k/10k race set up by Cole Schmidt," Hare says. "He did it as a community service project for Rogers Scholars and deserves a lot of credit for this."

Schmidt, who organized and hosted the Run for Veterans 5k/10k on May 21, says he's glad to know the money went to the ROTC program. "I wanted to do something for a veterans' organization, because I have several friends and family that have served, so I set it up to go to the VFW," Schmidt explains. "It feels great to know the money went to [ROTC]. It got put to good use."
