KYTC issues emergency order for truckers hauling petroleum

Drivers required to have copy of order in truck cab

By Ryan Watts, Executive Director
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Office of Public Affairs

FRANKFORT, KY (20 Sep 2016) - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Sec. Greg Thomas today issued an emergency order waiving the hours of service for commercial motor vehicle operators delivering petroleum in Kentucky. The order is in response to a gasoline pipeline leak in rural Shelby County, Alabama.

The order, issued Tuesday, temporarily relieves drivers of commercial motor vehicles from restrictions on hours of service while they are transporting petroleum in Kentucky.

Drivers are required to have a copy of the order in the truck cab if delivering petroleum beyond their normal hours of service. Motorists are also required to follow state and federal safety regulations at all times.

On Sept. 9, Colonial Pipeline officials found a leaking pipeline in Helena, Alabama, which reportedly spilled over 6,000 barrels of gasoline. The pipeline, which runs from Houston to New York, provides gasoline to an estimated 50 million people on the East Coast daily. The temporary disruption in service prompted officials in other states, including Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, to issue emergency declarations.

Kentucky's emergency order will expire on October 5, 2016, at midnight. The order can be downloaded from the Motor Carriers web address at: drive.ky.gov/Docs/Official_Order_110407.pdf.
