Kentucky Fish and Wildlife acquires property in Pulaski County

Rockcastle River Wildlife Management Area, between Somerset and London

From Commonwealth News Center
News from Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife

FRANKFORT, KY (11 Jul 2016) — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has acquired more than 2,900 acres in eastern Pulaski County. The property will be named Rockcastle River Wildlife Management Area due to its proximity to this designated Kentucky wild river.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will host a public information meeting Tuesday, July 19, 2016, to provide additional information about this property and to gather feedback on management ideas for the area. The meeting will be held at 6pmCT/7pmET at the Shopville School gymnasium, 10 Shopville Road, Pulaski County, KY.

The property is a short commute from both Somerset and London, and will provide outstanding recreational opportunities for hunters, anglers and wildlife watchers.

The property is primarily forested, with some 640 acres of overgrown fields of early successional habitat. Fourteen ponds dot the property. They range in size from half an acre to nearly 6 acres.

This property was purchased in part using Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act funds – commonly known as the Pittman-Robertson Act, with a match provided by the department’s game and fish fund. An excise tax on firearms, ammunition and archery equipment provides money to the Act to fund wildlife conservation in the state. No general fund tax dollars were used in the acquisition project.

The property is currently closed while Kentucky Fish and Wildlife completes parking areas and makes improvements necessary for public use. The department will issue a press release and update its website with maps and additional information once the property is opened.
