Year in Review: 2016 Lindsey Wilson Men's Tennis

By Charles Balcom

COLUMBIA, KY (Fri 1 Jul 2016) - A historic 2016 season saw the Lindsey Wilson men's tennis team advance to the NAIA National Championship Semifinals for the first time in program history.

The Blue Raiders had made it to four-straight national quarterfinals before finally reaching new heights with an upset of No. 2-ranked Auburn-Montgomery (AL) to punch their ticket to the program's first-ever final four.

After a hard-fought match, the season came to close in the semifinals with a loss to national runner-up Xavier (LA), ending the year with a 17-4 record. Lindsey Wilson had won 16 of their previous 17 matches before finally falling in the semifinal round.

Just two of the four losses on the year came against NAIA competition, while 15 matches came against opponents ranked or receiving votes in the national poll at the time. After going 1-2 to start the year, the Blue Raiders won seven-straight matches to improve to 8-2. Following a tight loss to NCAA Division I opponent Austin Peay State (TN), Lindsey Wilson would not lose again until the national semifinals as the Blue Raiders rolled off nine-consecutive victories.

Lindsey Wilson went a perfect 6-0 in Mid-South Conference competition en route to the program's 12th outright MSC regular season title.

The Blue Raiders carried that momentum into the postseason and captured the program's 13th MSC Tournament crown.

For their efforts throughout the season, Denis Porcic, Raul Mendez and Alonso Tellez received NAIA All-American honors.

Porcic was named to the First Team while Mendez and Tellez earned Second Team honors. Porcic went 14-1 on the year playing every match at the No. 1 singles position and 14-3 playing at the top doubles flight. He was a combined 6-0 during the national tournament. He was also selected as the MSC Men's Tennis Player of the Year. He did not drop a single match in conference play.

Mendez went 10-6 in singles play and 17-2 playing at the top doubles flight.

Tellez was 15-3 in singles play and 14-6 in doubles matches on the year.

Porcic, Mendez, Tellez and Ignacio Huertas were all named First Team All-MSC selections, while Tomas Depiaggio earned a spot on the Second Team.

Huertas was named the ITA East Region Most Improved Senior of the Year and Tellez earned ITA East Region Rookie of the Year accolades.

During the season, Tellez and Depiaggio earned MSC Player of the Week honors once, while Mendez and Porcic earned the weekly award twice.

The men's team ascended up to a No. 3 ranking in the national poll during the season.

In the classroom, Joshua Finley was named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete, while Huertas, Mendez, Isaac Allen, Mackenzie Montgomery, Collin Sparks and Finley earned Academic All-MSC honors.
