Supt. Reed gives upbeat report - 16 Jun 2016 meeting Report addresses

Superintendent Reed says he is well aware of the near 'shovel ready' plans for next Adair County School District facility project, The Learning Center/Central Office, and of the District's philosophy on workforce development and the unified community support for it. By Ed Waggener The prospects for the next major building project at the Adair County School District campus, the Learning Center/Central office building, are much improved, Superintendent Alan Reed said. 'Perfect storm for funding' The Learning Center will provide opportunities for Adults to utilize the building in the evenings, and for Adair County High School students to receive job certification training during the day time hours. The building dovetails perfectly with plans outlined by Education & Workforce Cabinet Secretary Hal Heiner, Mr. Reed said. He said that the crown jewel of the curriculum plan, certification in Industrial Maintenance is a badly needed workforce item now, and the demand for graduates with the certification will only grow in the coming years. Board Member Mike Harris he was impressed with the Board's own foresight. "What weve been working on already is what they want in Frankfort today." Adult training going well Mr. Reed noted that adult training was already proving successful. Most of the first class who earned welding certificates easily found jobs, and a second welding class is being formed, he said. Mr. Reed welcomes newest assistant principal Mr. Reed welcomed Summer Blair Brown as the newest administrative appointee. The Site Council at Adair County Elementary School named her as the Assistant Principal at Adair County Elementary School, replacing Sandy Wilson in that role Superintendent welcomes new head football coach Mr. Reed also welcomed the new head football coach, Clay Harris to the faculty. New emphasis on health awareness Mr. Reed noted that the development of the Outdoor Walking Classroom and Amphitheatre is in keeping with current emphasis on rural health awareness. He said that the Outdoor Classroom is advancing well, and that he is awaiting word on a grant application by Jelaine Harlow of the Adair County Health Department for signage showing distances, and lighting for the Outdoor Walking Classroom. He also said that the District is working with Harlow and with Mary Ann Loy on getting sidewalks from Downtown to the Campus, and that sidewalks are planned for Indian Drive. More parking for Adair County Primary Center Mr. Reed said that $48,000 in left over funds for the construction of Adair County Primary Center will be used to create a new parking lot accommodating 40 vehicles. The lot will be located just beyond the current parking lot on the Columbia Bypass side of the ACPC campus. He noted that the Greensburg Street campus front is being enhanced by the removal of crumbling pavement and restoration of green space there. 'Captured space' at ACHS will provide learning space for online college courses This fall, Mr. Reed said, there will be new space remodeled for online learning classes, one from Kentucky Community & Technical Training System, and for college level courses for students earning dual credit. The space was storage for furniture and surplus items no longer needed. School supplies are paid for starting this year Mr. Reed clarified an earlier announcement that will result in significant savings for parents. The school will purchase and furnish, at no cost to students, certain school supplies which parents previously had to purchase on their own. The board has allocated $20 per student for the program, he said. He added that the board will now be making many more purchases through the Green River Regional Educational Cooperative, which now offers a streamlined online purchasing system. Projected cash savings, he said, will be in the 2-3%, in addition to time saving which will free up time previously used for shopping multiple sources. This story was posted on 2016-06-20 06:20:50
