LWC Baseball at Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series on Friday

Lewiston, ID - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team begins play at the 2016 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series on Friday with a 2pmCT matchup against The Master's (CA) at Harris Field, 500 8th Avenue, Lewiston, Idaho.

The contest is the second game of the 10-team, double elimination tournament. Playing in their second-straight World Series, the eighth-seeded Blue Raiders (42-23) punched a ticket to the final site after winning the NAIA Opening Round - Lawrenceville Bracket on May 20. After dropping the opening game of the tournament, Lindsey Wilson proceeded to win five-consecutive elimination games, including beating host and No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett twice, the finale coming in walk-off fashion.


In 12 postseason games this year, the Blue Raiders hold a 9-3 record, including the Mid-South Conference Tournament and NAIA Opening Round. In six Opening Round games, Lindsey Wilson outscored its opponents 42-22.

Scott Sebald leads the pitching staff as he has racked up a 10-3 record, including four complete-game victories in his last five starts. His 10 wins are the 22nd most in the NAIA while his 112.2 total innings are the fifth most. The senior holds a 2.88 earned run average with 119 strikeouts and one save. Opponents are batting .228 against him. Daniel Ferrell is also fresh off a complete-game effort in one of the Blue Raiders' wins over Georgia Gwinnett. Ferrell holds a 7-3 record with a 4.15 ERA. Tyler Russell is 7-2 on the year and James Doubet leads the team with seven saves. In four postseason appearances, Aaron Doughty is 3-1.

Austin Atwell leads the team at the plate with a .346 batting average, 10 home runs and a .587 slugging percentage. In 12 postseason games this year, Atwell has been on fire with a .535 batting average, 23 hits, 14 runs scored, six home runs, 15 RBIs and a slugging percentage of 1.093. Aaron Ashton leads the team in RBIs (60), Edgar Lebron has a team-high 71 hits, and Victor Nazario is tied with Ashton for the team lead in doubles with 15. Lebron also leads the squad with 60 runs scored and 25 stolen bases, while Brandon Munoz trails him with 19 stolen bases.

The Master's (41-17) is making their third appearance at the World Series where they hold a 3-4 overall record. The ninth-seeded Mustangs earned their trip to Lewiston after sweeping their way through the NAIA Opening Round - Santa Barbara Bracket, including wins over No. 7-ranked Westmont (CA) and No. 25-ranked William Carey (MS). Both Lindsey Wilson and The Master's won their respective Opening Rounds as the No. 3 seed.

The Mustangs are led on the mound by the three-man pitching crew of Jason Karkenny, Connor Menez and Brad Lohse. Karkenny tossed a complete game in the win over William Carey in the championship game. He boasts an 11-5 record and his 114.0 innings pitched are the third most in the NAIA. Menez is 11-2 on the year with a team-best 2.34 ERA and four-complete games this year. His 11 wins are tied with Karkenny for the sixth most this season. Lohse is 9-3 with a 2.78 ERA and 107.0 innings pitched, the 13th most in the NAIA. Danny Lutz has a team-high five saves this year.

At the plate, Colin Nyenhuis has a .344 batting average and leads the team in runs scored (53), hits (73), doubles (20), RBIs (56), and total bases (142). He also has 15 home runs on the year, which trails only Nick Covello (17) and Michael Sexton (16). Covello is second on the team with 50 RBIs and has recorded a team-high 41 walks. He is one of five Mustang players with at least 60 hits on the year. Sexton leads the team in slugging percentage at .678 and has 18 doubles on the season to go along with his 48 RBIs.

The Master's is 7-1 this postseason including the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament and NAIA opening Round. The Mustangs came out of the consolation bracket to win the GSAC Tournament and are averaging 5.9 runs per contest this postseason.

Friday's winner advances to play top-seeded Faulkner (Ala.) at 8:30 p.m. CT on Saturday. The loser slips into the consolation bracket and will face the loser of fourth-seeded and host Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) and fifth-seeded Science and Arts (Okla.) on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.

Stretch Internet, the NAIA's official video-streaming company, will be broadcasting the first 15 games of the 2016 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series. Day passes can be purchased for $9.95, while an all-World Series ticket is available for $29.95. Games played June 1-3 will be delivered on ESPN3.
