LWC Women's Tennis advances to NAIA National Semifinals By Charlie Balcom Mobile, AL - The Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team punched their third-consecutive ticket to the NAIA National Semifinals after taking down sixth-seeded Cardinal Stritch (WI) by a 5-1 margin in the quarterfinal round on Thursday morning at the Mobile Tennis Center, 851 Gaillard Drive, Mobile, AL. . The third-seeded Blue Raiders (20-4) now face second-seeded Auburn-Montgomery (AL) in the final four with a spot in the national championship match on the line. That match is scheduled to begin on Friday morning at 9amCT. It was a slow start to doubles play as Lindsey Wilson trailed early at all three matches, but the Blue Raiders quickly found a rhythm and began pulling ahead. After being tied 3-3 at the No. 2 position, Jessica King and Fiona Curty rolled off three-straight points to take a 6-3 lead over Volcy Boilevin and Jitsupa Sirinit. The Wolves (19-3) clawed back into the match and trimmed the lead to 7-6, but the Blue Raider duo closed the door with an 8-6 victory to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 1-0. At the No. 3 position, Alex Shchipakina and Maria Prados Cid also broke a 3-3 tie by winning the next two points to move ahead 5-3 over Emily Kaftan and Louise Gruber. The duo then maintained their two-point advantage until capturing the point 8-6 and putting the Blue Raiders up 2-0. The top doubles flight was also tight, tied at 4-4 after the first eight points. But three-straight points by Alexi Loomis and Natalie Grieve made it 7-4 for the Wolves. Henar Munoz and Natalia Kattah battled back to within 7-6, but Cardinal Stritch edged out the 8-6 win to give Lindsey Wilson a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. In singles play, Curty made quick work of Kaftan at the No. 6 position with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory to make it a 3-1 advantage. Maria Prados Cid then won in straight sets at the No. 4 position 6-1, 6-2 over Sirinit to push the lead to 4-1. Shchipakina captured the fifth and decisive point as she took down Gruber 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position to seal the 5-1 victory and send Lindsey Wilson into the semifinal round. The other three matches went unfinished after the decisive point had been captured, but Kattah led by a set at No. 5, King trailed a set at No. 3, and Munoz was in the third set at No. 1.
