LWC baseball opens NAIA Opening Round action on Tuesday

COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team starts the 2016 NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round as the No. 3 seed in the Lawrenceville Bracket, where they face second-seeded Indiana Southeast on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at the Grizzly Baseball Complex, 1030 Collins Hill Road, Lawrenceville, GA 30043. at 1:30pmCT/2:30pmET.



Joining the Blue Raiders and Grenadiers in their double-elimination opening round bracket are host and top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett, fourth-seeded Olivet Nazarene (IL) and fifth-seeded British Columbia.

Competition in the Lawrenceville Bracket starts at 10amCT/11amET on Tuesday as Olivet Nazarene and British Columbia faceoff with the winner facing Georgia Gwinnett at 5 p.m. CT on Tuesday. Three more games are scheduled to be played on Wednesday, May 18 at 10amCT/11amET, 1:30pmCT/2:30pmET, and 5pmCT/6pmET.

On Thursday, action starts at 10amCT/11amET and the championship game starts at 1:30pmCT/2:30pmET, while the "if necessary" championship game is scheduled to be played at 10amCT/11amET, on Friday. There are a total of nine opening round brackets being held across the country, including the one held in Lawrenceville. The winner of each opening round earns a bid to the Avista NAIA World Series in Lewiston, ID.

Lindsey Wilson earned an at-large bid into the national tournament and they enter the opening round with a record of 37-22. The Blue Raiders lost to Campbellsville (KY) in championship game of the Mid-South Conference Tournament. Lindsey Wilson was also Co-Regular Season MSC Champion with the Tigers after they both finished conference play with records of 13-8.

Leading the Blue Raider offense this season has been Edgar Lebron, Austin Atwell and Aaron Ashton. Lebron leads the team with a .343 batting average, while Atwell and Ashton are hitting .331 and .328 this year, respectively. Lebron also has a team-high 68 hits and 58 runs scored. Ashton leads the team 55 RBIs, 32 walks, 15 doubles and seven home runs. Atwell rounds out the trio as he is second on the team in runs (35) and home runs (6), while posting the third most RBIs (36).

The Lindsey Wilson pitching staff has compiled a 4.29 ERA and an opponent batting average of .288 in 467-1/3 innings of work. Scott Sebald has led the Blue Raiders on the mound this season with a record of 9-3 and an ERA of 2.82. In 99 innings of work this season, Sebald has 102 strikeouts for Lindsey Wilson. James Doubet has posted a team-high seven saves this season.

Indiana Southeast also grabbed an at-large bid into the tournament as they are 42-13 and enter the week ranked 19th in the NAIA Coaches' Poll. The Grenadiers lost to Rio Grande (Ohio) in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in their last game. Indiana Southeast won the regular season title in the KIAC as they went 27-1 in conference play.

Trent Simpson has paced the Grenadiers this season with a .421 batting average, while also posting team-highs in hits (75), doubles (17), home runs (7) and RBIs (49). Simpson was just one of four players for Indiana Southeast to start all 55 games this season. As a team the Grenadiers have hit .310 at the plate this year.

On the mound, Indiana Southeast has a team ERA of 3.59 in 403-1/3 innings of work, while allowing opponents to hit .256 against them. Ty Simpson leads the team with seven wins this season, while Jarrod Messex and Greg Laughlin each have six wins. Messex has a team-leading 1.57 ERA in 18 appearances, while posting nine saves.

Georgia Gwinnett won the Association of Independent Institutions/Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Unaffiliated Group Tournament Championship with a victory over Clarke (Iowa) to earn an automatic bid into the national tournament. The Grizzlies are 55-4 on the season and they are currently ranked No. 1 in the national coaches' poll.

On offense, Georgia Gwinnett has three players averaging over .400 at the plate this season with Zac Rinehart leading the way with a .476 average. Josh Merrigan and Trey Haygood are hitting .429 and .409, respectively. Rinehart leads the team with 80 hits, 61 RBIs and 21 doubles. The Grizzlies rank in the top 10 of 24 statsical categories in the NAIA. Haygood leads the nation with 56 stolen base attempts and 45 stolen bases, while Merrigan ranks second in the nation in both categories with 48 stolen base attempts and 43 stolen bases.

The Georgia Gwinnett pitching staff has an ERA of 3.15, while holding opponents to just .233 at the plate and striking out 518 batters. In 25 appearances this season, Davis Adkins holds a record of 13-0 and has seven saves, while posting an ERA of 2.02. Adkins leads the NAIA with 13 wins.

Olivet Nazarene enters the tournament as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champion. The Tigers are 39-15 on the year and they finished 24-6 in CCAC action. Olivet Nazarene went just 1-2 during their conference tournament.

Madison Foster has led the Tiger offense this season with an even .400 batting average and he also leads the team with 62 hits. Jordan Hayes has led the team with 38 RBIs this season, while posting an average of .307. Kurtis Minton and Bryan Klendworth are the final two players to average over .350 this season for the Tigers with batting averages of .398 and .375, respectively.

Olivet Nazarene ranked ninth in the NAIA as a team with an ERA of 2.89, while Blake Uhlman leads the staff with a 2.19 ERA. Leading the Tigers in wins this year has been Jonathan Hentschel with nine, while Uhlman and Foster have eight wins apiece. Olivet Nazarene has held their opponents to an average of .248 this year.

British Columbia was the NAIA West Group regular-season runner-up to earn an automatic berth into the NAIA National Championship. The Thunderbirds are 38-20 this season and they went 23-12 in the NAIA West Grouping, finishing just behind No. 4 Lewis-Clark State (ID) in the regular season. British Columbia went 1-2 at the NAIA West Grouping Championship.

season, while posting 78 hits, 44 RBIs, 41 runs, 12 doubles, five triples and five home runs - all which lead the team. Yari was also the lone player for British Columbia to appear and start in all 58 games this season. Lucas Soper and Anthony Olson are the only other Thunderbirds to record at least 50 hits heading into the national tournament with 52 and 50, respectively.

British Columbia has the second best ERA in the nation at 2.58, while posting the third best opponent batting average in the NAIA with .216. Alex Webb leads the Thunderbird pitching staff with a 1.36 ERA (fourth in the nation) and he has allowed opponents to hit just .154 (second in the nation) this season. Webb, Curtis Taylor and Connor Noble each have nine wins on the mound this season.

Coming into the opening round, the Blue Raiders only faced Indiana Southeast this season and the Grenadiers won both matchups against Lindsey Wilson.

British Columbia leads all five teams with the most opening round appearances with six, while Lindsey Wilson has the second most with four. Georgia Gwinnett and Indiana Southeast are both making their third appearance in the opening round, while Olivet Nazarene is making their first-ever appearance in an opening round.
