COLUMBIA, KY - (Fri 29 Apr 2016)- The Lindsey Wilson baseball team defeated Cumberlands (KY) 15-9 to capture the Mid-South Conference Tournament Opening Round best-of-three series 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Egnew Park.

With the victory, the second-seeded Blue Raiders (35-20) advance to next weekend's four-team, double-elimination tournament held at Bowling Green Ballpark beginning on May 6. Cumberlands' season comes to an end with a 33-23 record.

After capturing the opening game of the series on Thursday night by a 5-2 margin, Lindsey Wilson earned a spot in the conference's final four after outlasting the Patriots in a high-scoring affair today.

The opening three innings breezed by scoreless before the bats came alive in the final six frames as the two teams combined to score 24 runs on 32 hits.

Cumberlands attempted to make the first dent on the scoreboard in the top of the third after a single up the middle trickled into centerfield, but Jan Carlos Ortiz picked up the loose ball and gunned down the runner at home attempting to score from second to keep things scoreless.

The Patriots did get on the board in the top of the fourth after Jesse Reyes hit a two-out single up the middle with runners on second and third to score one, but a groundout on the next batter prevented any further damage. The 1-0 lead would be the first for Cumberlands in the series.

That lead would quickly be erased by the Blue Raiders in the bottom half of the inning after Lindsey Wilson sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven times on eight hits to take a 7-1 lead.

Lindsey Wilson opened the scoring barrage with four-straight hits to score two runs. After the runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, Victor Nazario followed with a two-RBI single. Following another single and a groundout, Brandon Munoz delivered a two-RBI single of his own to push the lead to 6-1. Edgar Lebron then stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning and chased home Munoz with a single to make it 7-1.

The Blue Raiders tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth after Ortiz doubled and later scored on a balk to make it an 8-1 advantage.

Cumberlands' Tripp Jamieson made it an 8-2 game with a solo shot in the top of the sixth, but the Blue Raiders pushed the lead back to seven in the bottom half of the inning after Caleb Ratzman scored on a wild pitch.

The Patriots then exploded for four runs in the seventh, their largest scoring output of the series, doing so on a pair of doubles, a single, and a three-run home run to cut the lead to 9-6.

The Blue Raiders calmly responded with a three spot of their own in the bottom of the seventh, using a two-run shot from Ortiz and a sacrifice fly from Dustin Woody to account for the runs.

Cumberlands countered with three runs of their own in the top of the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch, single, and a walk to cut it back to a 12-9 game.

But just like in the previous inning, the Blue Raiders had an answer with three runs, all coming via the long ball thanks to a two-run blast by Atwell and a solo shot by Fabian Chirino.

Daniel Ferrell, who had entered in the eighth to pitch, then retired the Patriots in order in the ninth to secure the win and pick up his second save of the season.

Atwell had a 4-for-5 day at the plate, collecting two RBIs and three runs scored. Ortiz went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Both Atwell and Ortiz finished a triple shy of the cycle. All nine Blue Raiders that had an at bat recorded at least one hit.

Five different Patriots had multiple hits in the loss led by Jose Alonzo's 3-for-5 day with three RBIs.

Lindsey Wilson outhit Cumberlands 17-15.

Starter Aaron Doughty (6-5) picked up the win tossing five complete innings while allowing two earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders now head to Bowling Green for the four-team, double-elimination MSC Tournament set to begin on May 6. The tournament bracket will be released once all opening round series are completed this weekend.
