CIS Board Meeting: CES renovation ahead of schedule

By Calen McKinney
Campbellsville Independent Schools

Campbellsville Elementary School's renovation project is ahead of schedule. At the regular Campbellsville Board of Education meeting on Monday, April 18, Board members heard about the progress on the project and approved paint, brick, tile and other colors for the project.

Scott Noel of the N3D Group, the firm serving as architect for the renovations, told Board members that the first phase of the project is on schedule and the second phase is about nine days ahead of schedule.

The first phase is renovating new preschool classrooms on the left side of the building. Phase two is the addition of classrooms on the back of the building.

While construction is currently underway, it will kick into high gear after school is released on Thursday, May 19.

Noel said construction workers are doing a great job of keeping their work site clean.

Brick, tile and paint colors for the project were approved, and include purples, yellows, grays and whites to match Campbellsville Independent Schools' colors. Noel said the colors were chosen specifically to maintain the integrity of the CES building.

Renovations planned at CES include the addition of four new classrooms, a new HVAC unit, a fire suppression system, interior finishes, new kitchen and cafeteria, new restrooms, renovation of existing classrooms, a new playground for preschool students and work to administrative suites, parking areas and the front facade.

Once renovations are complete at CES, and then later at CMS, all fourth- and fifth-grade students will be housed at CES, making it a more traditional elementary school, and the CMS building will better suit the needs of a middle school.

The CES project will cost about $9.7 million.

Academic Spotlight

This month's Academic Spotlight was on Campbellsville High School.

Principal Kirby Smith said about 96 percent of this year's senior class is now college and/or career ready, which is up considerably from last year's 82 percent.

Smith said he believes that percentage will be at least 100, or greater, before the school year ends in a few weeks.

"I think we can get there," he said. "The kids take pride in this."

K-PREP testing begins at CHS on Tuesday, May 3, and Smith said his students are ready. Just because that date is nearing, he said, is no reason to panic. He said his teachers and students have been preparing for testing all year.

Students are also going to take Advanced Placement exams in coming days, Smith said, and many more will take them this year than last.

To that end, he said, CHS partnering with AdvanceKentucky will help his students and teachers make their goal of offering more AP classes come to fruition.

Smith said he and several other administrators recently met with officials from Big Picture Learning to talk about CHS becoming a Big Picture school. While no decisions have been made yet, Smith said he believes the program could greatly benefit his students.

CHS said the last few weeks of school will be a whirlwind, with many senior events, Smith said. About 60 students will graduate from CHS this year, he said.

Also at the Meeting:
  • In his monthly report, Deaton said the K-PREP testing window will open in a matter of days. He also announced dates for several upcoming activities, including:
    • Eighth-grade Recognition - Thursday, May 12 at 6 p.m. at Hamilton Auditorium.
